After reading your posts, XRayMD, I can't figure out why your numbers would be low even with the Superchip upgrade. The most interesting part is the results of my own dyno run:

I have the Dinan software (stage 2), exhaust and CAI in place and these were the results. I do not have a baseline number since I never had my M5 dynoed prior to having the Dinan parts installed.

Do you also know what the temperature/climate conditions were on that day? It was around the 50's for me. I'm told that also has a factor in producing HP/TQ numbers.

It is my understanding that even though we all have S62 engines in our newer M5's, they do not all produce the same power. Second, I am told that dynos will vary as well. I was told that the same M5 can give a range of results on different Dynojet dynos. As I noted, it was 65.5 degrees at the time of the dyno and that is definitely a factor. Also, as I stated, I was told that the Superchip does not interact well with mods. and may be leaning out the mixture and thereby losing power. I was told that they have confirmed this by demonstrating an actual DROP in HP after a mod. (like CAI) in a vehicle that has the Superchip ECU program. This pisses me off, to tell you the truth, but I will get the Powerchip as soon as it is released.

When ordering the Powerchip, do they take into account the mods on the car (like Dinan Stage 1, 2, 3, etc.)?

What happens if you order a Powerchip and then do some mods? Is an upgrade available?

I'm not sure about those questions regarding the Powerchip. I do know that they "customize" the software for you with respect to where you want the added benefit (down low, up high or across the band). You might want to email them. I've had contact with Ryan Naylor there.

Jason-

Your numbers are within the range of results for stock S62 dyno pulls. At the time I had mine done, the range of all results posted to the board was about 325-348 BHP. While your Dinan mods may have upped the ante a bit, you can never know without a baseline run. And, as has already been pointed out, the variability between Dynojet machines could also explain a good bit of that range.

Bottom line: the true value of dyno charts is to compare pre- and post-modification under the same testing conditions (i.e., at the same date and time). The eliminates even the same-machine variance due to weather, tie-down tension, etc.

FWIW, my 'baseline' runs were an exact match for Steve's: 335BHP and 325TQ.

Steve, Don't be discouraged. All these mods need to work together to optimize net power gains. You can add a less restrictive intake, and not get the benefit unless you do something on the exhaust end, or vice versa. And certainly if your ECU is not recalibrated to deal with the various mods you've done, then everything can be sub-optimized. Generally if you have mods, the ECU may take several tweaks to get it right. Having readings from an A/F meter and exchanging data from the ECU with Superchips will probably help them get you a more optimal program and this may take a few trys to get it right.

Also, its important to note that when all the various parts are installed, you won't necessarily get an end result that is the cumulative sum of all the HP claims for the individual parts that you install. This is one advantage of Dinan's staged approach, they have already figured out how to make various mods work together in an optimum way.

Doug

On with the powerchips!!!!

Steve,

Oh its time buddy for us to get that powerchips....enough with the low HP numbers!

sorry to hear about your slight disappointment with the numbers posted (just more reason to go nutty with mods). Im hopeful that i show some good numbers in jan. I will be posting numbers after that session.

Im really interested in the headers but if welding is involved...i dont trust anyone within a 200 miles radius of melbourne. Too many probleme with it...i might just have to stop thinking headers and just concentrate on the Powerchips upgrade at this point.

Just a few comments to add to the thread:

Heat soak will KILL HP/TQ figures on the M5.

It's very difficult to obtain actual gain figures on a dyno from an intake. The best test for gains is to do timed accelertion runs for comparison.

Many cars will dyno differently on any given day.

FAST4DR:

I agree. It's actually impossible to get a reliable dyno for an intake system such as AA's. You can not reproduce the actual ram air effect using fans which blow air at a constant velocity which is probably a lot less the the velocity rammed during driving. I expected that.

What I didn't expect was the negative effect that the Superchip software responded with after the intake was installed. WHere's my Powerchip?!!! I'm going to email them today and see if I can pin them down on a release date for the US and to see if they have to alter thier programming to take advantage of mods such as the CAI, headers, exhaust, etc. I'll let you know what they say.

Exhaust clearance question

BTW, does anyone know how close the tips of the exhaust are supposed to be from the cut out in the rear bumper? (That is what is the clearance from the top of the tip to the edge of the cut-out)
