For you guys with Kellener's exhaust (83 mm size) I have a question for you, please..

Well, after a complicated procedure, I finally picked up my 83 mm Kellener's exhaust. I must say the exhaust looks nice! I checked out the finish & overall quality and Im not disappointed. It was however nothing less than a ***** to figure out where the shipment box was being held/stored and to get an actual physical address so I could retrieve my exhaust. Kellener's uses a company called "Panalpina" to export the exhaust out of Germany and to bring the item over to the USA. Once it gets to America, you have a general idea of which state or two (in my case, NJ or NY) the item is located, but finding out where it is was like finding a needle in a hay stack, simply because you don't know which airline the exhauat was transported on and which cargo holding area the item is being held. Kellener's is of no help, since they provided me with minimal information and at times the info. was incorrect! For the guys who already have gone through what Im describing, they probably know what Im talking about, and can relate. I asked Ralf and Dirk of Kellener's what it would cost to have the exhaust delivered right to my house door steps. The guess for the cost was approx. $500.00 USD.
Well, guess what, after all was said and done, paying the U S Customs office fees, various release fees, storage fees, duty fees, etc........................................
The total out of pocket cost was $300.00 USD. For an extra $200.00 I could of had the exhaust delivered to my home, saving me the aggravation and the lose of time, dealing with such bull crap. For you guys that are considering buying the Kellener's exhaust, I would SERIOUSLY consider having someone like DHL Express, FedEx or UPS deliver the shipment to your house/office, you'll regret doing what I did, picking it up yourself. Again, I am NOT disappointed with their product!
Anyway, I have a question for those with the Kellener's exhauat, specifically the 83 mm size exhaust. When I looked inside the exhaust tube/tip area, I noticed an inner llining (black color) and this lining has tiny little pin likeholes all over this metal lining. It appears as though, there is like "Brillo"steel wool/material in between the outer exhaust and the black color inner lining. What is this inner lining for? Why does it have the tiny little pin holes all over the metal lining tube?????
Last, what is the Brillo type steel wool doing between the inner and outer exhauat pipe/tip ????
Any thougfhts on this would be appreciated! Thank you guys.
Robert
PS The entire shipment box weighed 56 LBS. Im guessing that each exhaust weighs approx. 23 LBS. each ???? Can this be true?

I too ordered the Kelleners 83mm exhaust along with pedals and short shifter. It was supposedly shipped out today, and they assured me that things will be fine. Gosh, I hope I will have an easier time locating my packages.

That inner wall is a heat baffle and an exhaust tip line-up of some sort. When you order an exhaust from Eisenhaus/Eisenmann (a very similar exhaust), you can specify if you want this shield. So in other words, I think you will be fine if you rip it out.

My fingers are crossed that things will proceed smoothly for me. Thanks for your insight!

I also never understood kelleners going through the whole freight thing... much faster and more convenient to have fedex or DHL ship it....
although I never ordered from kelleners, I have heard the stories from M5er and Rallistas.... not fun at all....

From what I have heard it's a heat shielding to prevent discoloration fo the tips. I doubt the heat will discolor it without it.

Another purpose of the baffle is to line up the actual can opening with the exhaust tip. The actual opening on the can is a lot smaller, probably 76mm. Since the 'optional' 83mm tips is basically the identical can from the 76mm exhaust with two larger exhaust tips welded to it, the baffle was placed in there so when you look into the exhaust, you don't see a large opening (tip) with a smaller opening in back of it (front of can). Did that make sense?

Ok, here is a not-so-good example, but it's the best I could find. It's an Eisenmann 83m exhaust for an MB CLK, but it has that inner baffle. If that were not there, looking into the exhuast tip would expose a smaller exhaust can opening with a big tip around it.

I am almost certain that this is the reason for it. The 76mm versions of the Kelleners/Eisenmann exhaust doesn't need it because the tips line up perfectly with the openings on the can, which are also 76mm. if you look closely on the picture, there is a littel bit of reflective surface still exposed despite the baffle. Hand made exhausts, what can we say? Sometimes the tips just do not line up perfectly, but I am pretty sure that the baffle is for this. Better than looking at a smaller hole in a bigger tip right? I hope I helped out. Ok, enough, bedtime.
