service manuals
I have the bmw tis (service) and etk (parts catolog. It's fair. The TIS is designed for the seasoned BMW tech. The layout isn't necessarily intuitive, it can take some time to find what you want. It's certainly better than nothing, and is handy for torque values and such. I haven't really needed to use it, but am glad to have it. I have it installed on an old pc in the garage, and am sure it'll come in handy someday.
The ETK has been more valuable to me, for looking up part numbers. For instance, I installed 540 brakes on my 528 and used the etk to look up the parts #'s to swap the required parts. I could then simply bring the part numbers into the dealer's parts counter. Again, the interface isn't the most intuitive, but after poking around a bit you can figure it out.
Bentley is supposed to come out with an e39 manual in first quarter of 03, not sure if the M5 will be covered though...
