        Wheels replaced under warrantee

My dealer just called me to say that BMW WILL replace my '00
Wheels. I have experienced, as have many of you, finish degradation. Well, I'm getting new ones free.

Has anyone else had this good fortune?

        Bruce

Congrats! I have heard of some others with the same trouble and one who got them covered by the dealer. What I have not seen however is a photo of the problem! Is there anyway you can show the group here what the problem wheels look like with a photo?

If someone can take me step by step and show me how to post a picture I'd be glad to. Bare in mind, I am pretty computer illiterate

Basically the finish wears off and the black primer begins to show. I'm told it's the brake dust that causes it.

Is this degrading finish problem on the wheels inherent to the older cars (2000 etc.) or just a problem with the wheel finish in general?

        Thanks

This is something I've never taken notice of, but I've witnessed it happen to our M5....We had to get a tyre replaced because it was scuffed and because of the speeds we do here, it isn't too wise to have unhealthy tyres.....That's when it is much more obvious to the eye, when you fit New OEM rims to the car combined with the older OEM ones...I always thought is was Brake dust, untill now

I also would appreciate to see a picture of this problem

        Thanks In advance

All four of my wheels were replaced by BMW, black spots came through the finish all over the wheels. The funny thing was the BMWNA person, he had to see them personally requiring an extra trip to the dealer, said he would authorize only the replacement of four wheels! I thold him it was OK not to do the spare!

The wheels on my 2000 M5 were replaced under warrantee. The top surface was starting to peel off. Sorry for the size of the picture:

AndyS - Is that pitting I see on the inner parts of the wheel? Is that caused by brake dust sitting on the wheel for any length of time or is that also the wheel finish problem? I remember the wheels on my Porsche 968 were really bad for pitting if I did not keep them clean regularly.

        Thanks for the pic.

Yup, pitting, flaking and the carbon from the brake discs bonded itself to the alloy surface. Not good. The dealer attempted to get the wheels refurbished and was told by several companies that it was impossible on these wheels without spending a fortune. They finally replaced them with a new set.

I have one wheel with the pitting problem. The other three are pretty good (not perfect). I asked BMW to replace the one wheel and the BMW rep. told my service advisor "absolutely no way". Not the right answer - now I'm mad about it.
