From the bmwnav group on Yahoo comes this Sirius Radio update from BMW. Looks like most of us M5 owners will be waiting longer than expected. Also note that the system simply doesn't work in the Z8, presumably becuase the sheet metal size/shape doesn't allow the antenna to work properly
I just dont know if either Sirius or XM will be the final sat radio company. I think both have their issues. I know many are excited about sat radio- but Id rather have better mp3 capability in the cars.

I have XM radio in my Suburban and it is great! From what I have read, the financial viability of both XM and Sirius is somewhat in doubt. Both have been burning through money much faster than income. XM has about 400,000 subscribers and Sirius has less than 100,000.
I think FM digital radio will be the nail in the coffin for satellite radio. The only advantage satellite radio will have is you can have your stations everywhere. Don't know if that's going to be enough.
1. the radio companies would be crazy if they didnt subsidize the receiver built in to your car, so it should be a no cost option to you for the function
2. the phones cost so much because they are (relatively) low volume item that require special programming by motorola or other manufacturer- thats why the BMW 8000 phone is so expensive, but a time port from Verizon or whomever is so inexpensive.
3. you might be right- digital terrestrial may be the death knell for sat radio. I think there is a place for both because of all the business travel as well as boaters, etc.
4. I think the sat radio companies are so far not being creative enough to really push their product through the clutter (eg- would you rather have in your car a dvd player or sat radio? I bet most people go with dvd, at least I know I would, but then again, I dont do long interstate drives or do very much boating....)
