rear tire hitting wheel well
I know this topic has been covered before (what hasn't?)...but...has anyone had experience with rear tire hitting edge of wheel well and getting cut? Happened to mine...first service rep told me it was too much acceleration without hitting sport button...then he said it was busted sway bar. Also, do you think tire is dangerous? It's just at the edges, with treads shaved off about 1/8 in.

What? I can't believe the BS some SRs try to dish out. How could not hitting the sports button affect this? OMG! Also, if it was a busted sway bar, they should replace that and the tire under warranty.

It's better not to take any chances. This happened to my car before I even took it off the lot. The dealer rolled the fenders and replaced the tire, no questions asked.

Some of these service advisors are ASSCLOWNS. This is a known service issue on '00-'01's. The inside lip of the fender on the wheel well is NOT rolled enough. With heavy acceleration, a slight dip in the road and some weight in the rear (passengers) sometimes the tire will scrape on the wheel well edge, shaving your rubber and bending the inner lip. The fix is for a body shop to roll the fender a bit more and the tire will be replaced under WARRANTY. They replaced both of my rears when this happened on my '01.
What your service advisor told was the equivalent of: "the flux- capacitor-Kafram stam fetzer valve broke."
What a moron.

1) The SR is "Full of Sh#t" saying what he said about the Sport Mode (he should be fired).
2) You should get a free new tire without delay.
Dealers are clueless.

amen to the above -- this is a very well known problem and should be covered by a service bulletin by this time -- but of course the service bulletins are top secret and nobody reads them anyhow

BMWNA - read this
If a rep from BMWNA reads this board, please give us some real data. Is problem with well touching? Is it in a service bulletin? Is tire dangerous and in need of replacement? Is the story about the "sport" setting a bunch of bs or true?

Yeah, I only wish that the sport button would stiffen the suspension.
I think that since the fenders are rolled at the factory, there is some margin of error. The non-M E39 has unrolled fenders, so I am sure that some individual's M5s have slightly more rolled than others.

In looking at my '01, it seems that my fenders are rolled fairly significantly, never even was an issue until I got Dinan's S3 suspension. Now after reading this thread, I am a little concerned . . . I wasn't going to roll further, but now maybe I should . . . BTW, I did a search on this topic and most said it wasn't necessary, but a couple did anyway. Didn't notice if they mentioned the year of their cars. Kevin

Kevin-
Most of us that installed the KW coilovers have found some minor additional rolling to be necessary. It's not that the rolled portions are not rolled enough, it's simply that the radius (arc) of the rolled surface doesn't continue far enough around the front-most edges of the fenderwells. I found that by ham-fistedly rolling an additional inch or so (using a round floor jack handle leveraged against the tire), I was able to eliminate ALL fender clearance issues.
FWIW, I let the contact continue for a long enough period that--due to the wearing paint finish--I could determine exactly where the contact was happening. I should also note that, even with several weeks of occasional wheel rub, the outer most edge of the tread block was worn just the slightest bit, creating these little rubber fringes like a Harley accessory. I cannot see that a tire replacement would be at all necessary.
If the car was (1) brand new, and (2) bone stock, then I might ask a dealer to replace the tires. However, since the car has 48,500 miles and is significantly modded, I'm not gonna even ask!
