        Michelin Pilot Sports

Just bought a set of Pilot Sports. Ordered "Y" rated tires. The dealer was invoiced for "Y" rated tires but the Sports only have ZR on the tires. My OEM Conti's had ZR and then 94Y for a load rating of 94 and a speed rating of "Y". Michelin makes ZR, ZRW, ZRY rated tires any one know how to tell by reading the tire stamping that the tire has the higher speed rating on ZRY. I am beginning to wonder if the distributor is trying to pull a fast one. Does Michelin put a "Y" stamp on the tire or some other code?

        TIA

Here is an explanation of speed ratings:

Assuming you have purchased the Pilot Sport (and not the Pilot Sport A/S or Pilot Sport Cup) you have nothing to worry about. The Pilot Sport is a Y-rated tire, notwithstanding the ZR in the size designations (e.g. 245/40ZR18 and 275/35ZR18).

Here's the current information on the Pilot Sport at Michelin's own web site:

        How is it Y rated?

Both Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct list the Pilot Sport as a Z-rated tire. From what I know..the 94Y is the load rating on the tire. Granted it is different from theh speed rating...I guess that means that the tire can only handle as much weight as a Y rated but the speed rating is Z.

        Check it out..from tire rack

        Don't worry..

        Z means 149+

the others like Y or W get more specific like 186...etc

so in other words a W or Y rated tire is a Z rate tire by defult.

the number before the W or Y is a load rating.

The link I provided to Michelin's site identifies it as a Y-rated tire. (Go look.) I think the manufacturer probably knows more about the tire than the reseller, don't you agree?

I just got a set of the Pilots, and specifically asked for the Y rated version. For tires that go to the European market, the tires must have the Y rating stamped on the sidewall (eg. 94Y). The US DOT does not require this stamp, so it is missing. The tires are the same however. Probably some legal crap why Michelin would rather leave the rating off the tires if it is not mandatory to put it on. Anyway, I spent a lot of time/effort to try to figure out what is going on. After numerous discussions with Michelin, the best I could get was specific part numbers that Michelin internally monitors as being "Y" rated tires. If you have these part numbers (they are on the label glued to the tread) then you have "Y" rated tires, specifically for the M5:
        front: 98279
        back: 47418

        Thanks,

Your info is what I needed. MY OEM Tires had the 94Y on them and those I bought as replacements did not. I talked to Mich. this morning and they told me that it was not necessary in U.S. to stamp 94Y on the tires.

I note the tires show made in France 33 week of 2000 per DOT Number.

Now I am looking for info about a compound change in 2002 that improved handling.

Anyone know about a compound chance in 2002 for Pilot Sports?

I just noted that discounttiredirect.com has the Pilot Sports on special.
They are $309 rear and $257 front (INCLUDING shipping). This is the best delivered price I've seen on Pilot Sports.
Both are shown as Y rated.

Their clearing room for winter tires I suppose. Nice buy for us Floridian's! Thanks for the update.
