The next person to upgrade his/her exhaust should try this experiment just before the upgrade. I have a FLSTN Harley Davidson and the day I bought it, the dealer drilled out the exhaust pipes (for free) - it was the best mod ever done to the exhaust - it sounds great! I got to keep my stock fish tail mufflers and it sounds better than most add-on units that you have to pay for.
Someone take a large drill and just push it right up each exhaust pipe to punch some holes inside each unit to allow more air flow. And then tell us how it sounds - this may end up being a great low cost upgrade to get more sound out of the mufflers without spending $1000. If you are going to replace the mufflers - give this a try as there is no down side!

umm.. well... a lot of people keep their stock mufflers so they can put it back on when they're selling the car.... not sure if the next guy would want a car sounding like a rocket with drilled out exhaust.. :p

Lets get someone to try this. If it works - it would save us a lot of money and it would be a great upgrade. There has got to be someone willing to do it! I am sure that not everyone keeps the old stock mufflers.
It worked great on my Harley. And it is not to loud - just right.

I dont know if this is applicable to a car muffler without sacrifing flow. The chambers in a car muffler are not straight therefore it may actually lose power due to the interuption the new hole would present. Just a thought.

Of course that depends on the side of the hole....
But you do have a valid point there...what is the purpose of an aftermarket exhaust? Often to gain some horsepower, with the added benefit of a nicer sound. If you're just looking for a nicer sound, this could be the way to go...although it really is a bit of a botch job of course. Not sure if the car would pass technical inspections in every location either - some areas require exhaust systems to be 100% leakfree from manifold to exhaust tip.
