Hi guys, I was lucky enough to attend the Top Speed Challenge that the Nissan SX owners club held at RAF Woodbrige near Ipswich in the UK. A great day with about 60 cars entering. Quarter mile and a 1.7 mile times were recorded using professional Tag-Heur timing equipment.
Out of the 60 runners, there were some pretty serious cars there including a 600+ Hp Supra and a 550 Hp 200 SX. Although the Supra managed an amazing speed of 186mph at 1.7 miles, I must say that the M5 held up pretty well against the others. The starting area was very slippy and my 1st qtr mile time was an amazingly bad 15.34 with a top speed of 157 at the 1.7 mile mark. Subsequent runs were pretty interesting :
1. 15.34s @ 103.0 mph, 157 mph (TC off, very bad wheelspin at start - driver only)
2. 14.47s @ 101.0 mph, 156 mph (TC on - driver + 2 passengers)
3. 14.10s @ 104.5 mph, 159 mph (TC off, better start, still some wheel spin - driver only)
4. 15.10s @ 100.3 mph, 139 mph (TC on, friend driving - backed off - not his car )
5. 14.18s @ 102.6 mph, 158 mph (TC off, another friend driving, 1 passenger)
Interestingly an extra bit of the runway was opened up at the start (before the qtr mile mark) and I managed to get to 120mph, yet I still could not break the 160mph mark - inspite of an additional 17mph. I can only conclude that the speed limiter is working on my car.
too bad you didn't break 14 seconds... the track must have been pretty slippery most of the day.. a stock M5 should be able to get to the mid 13's with a good launch..
was the supra the fastest car there that day?

I am thinking about purchasing a Supra and put a single-big turbo in it like StreetKing had done. Freaking amazing vehicles. Then again, there's the 2005-2006 Supra, rated at 500HP stock. I wonder if there are any truth in that?

Hi - I'm Keith_C from the 200SX board, although I have a Supra (no.55) and not a 200 - don't ask
Glad you came along Andy - was great to see a decent car actually being used for something other than sitting 3mm from the car in front Can't believe how much stuff was in that - I've seen less electronics in PC World! You need to do something to open up the full blare of that V8 though

Bleh - we (the Supra club) have heard so many false rumours, seen so many photoshopped fakes, etc etc, that we're not going to believe anything said until Toyota themselves reveal something. To be honest, the next Supra will probably be under a Lexus badge anyway - the MKIV Supra is reallly a GS300 with a different shell and a couple of turbos - they were put together in a Lexus factory and only sold (in the UK) through selected Lexus dealers, and IMO they would probably have sold better, and have better residuals, if they'd had the Lexus badge too - saying you drive a Toyota doesn't really go down to well in the label war, no matter how fast/good it is
If you want a big single conversion, stay away from what the US sites tell you, and do the job properly. The US sites tell you how to create something that will survive the 10 seconds or so to do a dyno run or drag pass, on high-octane race fuel. Over here we build cars that will give reliable mileage on SUL - the Supra that managed 187 has been at that level of tune for years now. This Supra site will be useful if you want to buy one.
Still, like I say, good to see you, and hope some more of you turn up to the next one
Keith

You've got to remember that this was a disused air field we were using - not a drag strip. My 1st start was at 2500 rpm and that resulted in a burnout. Starting from 1500 rpm was the only way to get it off the line. The surface was very slippy, that said, the Michelin Pilot Sports on my car don't seem to grip as much as the Dunlop SP 9000 on my last car. This is really suprising as I thought the Michelin were a superior tyre.

Andy.
On a drag strip or an airfield, you have to roll off the line, you can't do launches unless your are using drag radials or slicks, or you car has front wheel drive.......
There are many topics on the board that I have admited to knowing nothing about, but I have a great deal of experience on this topic.....
Please trust me.....try it again, but roll the car of the line and once the car is rolling go to half throtle, don't go full throtle until you reach about 4000rpm and then you can go balls out.....Just watch your shift to second, you can loose the rear end very easily on drag surfaces when you have that much power.....
That should help a lot....
