OT:Diesel Pick-Ups Trucks!

Sorry all, this is way off topic but I had to drop in and share it with some like-minded motorheads.

In my "career" I have tuned and added aftermarket products to a wide variety of vehicles: cars, SUVs, motorcycles, on and on. A couple weekends ago, my eyes were opened to a new aftermarket segment: performance products for turbo-diesel pickup trucks and SUVs.

There is a local "diesel truck tuner" by the name of Valley Fuel Injection, who's the local dealer of BD Diesel Peformace Products. A buddy of mine had a little bit of work done on his fishing truck there and the rest is history.

Long story short, this tuner has clients who have spent thousands - in some cases tens of thousands - of dollars on BD and other products in order to increase their truck's power for towing purposes...and now street performance! The list of parts sounds reasonably similar to that of an import turbo performance catalog. Some of these guys were running full-length (from the turbo to the tailpipes) FIVE-inch exhausts; boost levels were well over 50 PSI...well over One Hundred PSI in some instances. Can you believe it??

Twice a year, the tuner hosts an event named "Dyno Days," where clients and enthusiasts come from far & wide to witness the King Of The Hill on the firm's rolling dynanometer. People eat hot dogs, watch trucks make dyno pulls, and witness the results on a projected screen. The winner(s) get recognition and a prize I believe.

We saw horsepower figures typically in the 350 RWHP range, with some trucks getting close to and over 500 RWHP. Die-hards kept their closest eye on horsepower figures; however, "newbies" such as myself were crying with laughter over the TORQUE these monsters were putting out!!!

To put it into real-life terms: I saw several Dodge, Ford and Chevy diesel pickups (mostly "duellies," no less) that were capable of 13-second quarter miles. Yes that's right...6-and-7-thousand-pound trucks capable of running with most sports cars...AND capable of laying down eighth-mile patches of rubber...NO exageration!!!!

The show-stealer was the firm's own experimental 2002 Dodge 2500 Sport short-box. This truck was silver in color and - with the exception of suspicious red traction bars out back - a complete sleeper.

You could imagine the laughter and disbelief when it produced 550 RWHP...and almost 1,290 FOOT POUNDS OF REAR-WHEEL TORQUE. This truck HAS BEEN CLOCKED - TWICE - at 11.8 in the quarter-mile.

All in all, it was eye-opening and f**king hilarious. I must admit we were tempted to go order diesel trucks for a couple days. Imagine running away from an ML55 (and, say, a CLK 55) with your noisy old Dodge Ram!

Anyway, that's my story. But don't take MY word for it!

Wow! I believe it, I saw a white Dodge Ram pull 13 flat at the 1/4 mile, and it probabyl only had a minor boost upgrade.

Alps,

As the proud owner of a 2002 Ford F250 Powerstroke, I too am mesmerized by what these engines are capable of. I recently installed an "Air-Raid cold air box with K&N filter" and reprogramed my computer with a Hypertech software programmer and my truck now makes over 600 pounds of torque and around 325-350 HP at the crank. I recently towed my trailer with the Cobra R to a track event in Iowa and the thing pulled my 9000 pounds like it was nothing, and I got an average of 13-14 mpg doing it! I am making 20 mpg while not towing right now. It has more power, more torque, and makes better mileage after doing the upgrade.

I am also really enjoying it as a daily driver. A very comfortable vehicle to drive every day, and I can park it ANYWHERE without worrying about door dings.

Just in case you guys are wondering though?? I DO miss the M5 from time to time...

Andy, do you have a long bed or a short bed?

We need to replace a 1995 GMC Suburban 2500 Tonawonda 454 with something that has a 12,000lbs towing capacity. I know when we looked at the GMC Suburban 2500 Turbo Diesel, we turned it down due to cost, and the salesman told me that I will get many miles with it and that will offset the inital cost. Now, my Suburban has transmission difficulties (looks cracked to me-dropping fluid), and has cost a total of $3500 in repairs the last 7 months. Diesels have always sounded cool, and they can haul incredible loads, so it is an intriguing thought of getting a diesel...

Anybody know about the Dodge Rams that are supposedly getting Mercedes-Benz Diesels? That sounds interesting.

Paul,

I have a crew cab short bed. I also got the 4X4. A very nice truck!! I got mine loaded with the Lariat package. It also has the heavy duty towing package (Camper package) with extra heavy duty springs. It stickered for close to $44K. I was fortunate to buy mine at the X plan price. It came to about $37K out the door.

You could also get the same engine, drive train, and wheelbase with the Excursion if that is more to your liking?... The Powerstroke is a great powerplant and has proven to be very reliable over the years that Ford has been using it.

Email me directly if you wish to take the discussion offline? Or PM me.
