        M5 vs. Viper torque

I'm on the wait list for an M5, but have never driven one (currently have 99 540/6). I did drive a friend's 94 Viper (before the increase in HP) and I was wondering how the torque of the M5 compares to the Viper in "feel". I know the numbers, but the Viper sure felt like a street racer. Will the M5 come anywhere close?

        Thanks - Chris

I have a bit of experience with both M5 and Viper (recent coupe) and would say that the M5, while a quick sedan, is nowhere close to the Viper in torque (or grip).

        Tenney,

Thanks. I was hoping to find someone to compare the older (less powerful) Viper also.

        All,
If I may say so, it doesn't seem fair to compare a Viper to an M5. Different types of cars. The Viper is built to go *fast* in a straight line with no stealth whatsoever.

M5 is about the entire package: a stunning car which happens to be a BEAST as well. I guess I wouldn't think that my M could trounce a Viper.

        my 2 cents.

        JTL,

I was just trying to get an idea as to the "feel" of the M5's torque, not really to compare the cars. I understand difference in the cars and that they were built with different purposes and that's been discussed extensively on this and other boards. Actually, I wish that I had the garage space (and of course $) to have them both. It's probably just as well because I'm not interested in going to jail!

        Thanks - Chris

I've driven both on the track and the Viper would win in the "torque" department as well as the "instant rear wheel spin" category, "shoddy workmanship" category, "crude handling" category, "hard ride" category, "needs brute strength to turn" category, and flat out 0 to 60 mph category as well. Have they put in "real" side windows yet – the cockpit got so #$*&@* HOT you could have roasted a turkey while lapping Laguna Seca!?? Needless to say would never want to own one, but they are a real kick in the pants to drive (once in awhile) - give me the M5 any day!

I don't think we are really being fair here.. The Viper is an excellent car taken in the rite perspective.. brutal but totally involving (a bit too much for most, I'd admit).. The M5 is more a vehicle of refinement but still has all the tools to make little boys out of grown men.. it all depends on whether u want the hot but fiesty or the classy and ever rewarding babe..
