        Dirty exhaust tips?

        Hi folks!

I have a short question about something that has been
irritating me for a while. It seems like I am having problems
keeping my exhaust tips clean for a longer period of time.

When I owned my BMW 850 CSi, that also had a quad
exhaust, I really used to love how clean and shiny the tips
remained for several days after I washed the car. With the
M5 it seems this just last for one day and then they look
        dark and dirty again.

The inside of the exhaust becomes black after just one day
of driving and the outside gets a brownish, darker color. The
result of this on a dark car like mine is basically that the tips
don't stand out as the lovely detail they actually are

Do you guys have any advice on what I could use to get a
better result when washing this part of the car? Also, could
this be something related to the Kelleners exhaust. Anybody
else out there with the Kelleners exhaust that has the same
        "problem"?

I know this is just a detail, but I am a sucker for details so
        this is simply bothering me

        Best regards,

        Fedde

The engine in the M5 runs "rich" from the factory. This is why it doesn't take long for black deposits to build up in the tail-pipes.

        See these threads:

        o Black Smoke!!

        o Faulty Cats

o Have you seen your M5s puff exhaust smoke?

(Do a "search" and you'll get even more info...)

        Hi,
Try Mothers Mag & Alluminum Polish, it makes my m3 pipes look better than new.

Try Wenol blue label metal polish with 0000 steel wool for the insides and Luster Lace stripes for the outsides.

I use Mothers too and it seems to keep them clean for a few trips and make cleaning them in the future easier. I do inside and outside, looks great.

But in your case sounds like the car is running too rich. The dealer should test the emissions on your car to clear it as the cause of the dirty pipes.

Also check the other thread regarding choice of gasolne also. The outside of mine stay clean fine, and the insides get what I consider to be normal discoloration, running Mobil super prem.

You're not waxing the pipes are you ? I've heard of Harley guys waxing their bikes, including the exhaust and the minute they heat them up the wax on the exhaust discolors.

As far as I'm concerned it's perfectly normal and OK for the inside of the pipes to be jet black, but I do like to keep the outside clean and shiny.

easier on the accellerator stock m5s run just right, not rich not lean. clean the exhaust and rachet down a notch or two your accelleration habits pipes will be clean for a long long time.

aside from that there is absolutely nothing you can do about the inside of the pipes.

All of my M5's and Z8 have had the same dirty pipes which I don't mind. Shows that they ain't for show!! If you check the smog index on our cars, it's on the higher end also.

I am suprised BMW doesn't charge extra for the black sporting look of the inside of the exhaust. Heck, BMW sells this color as sporting on every other part of the car. However, I don't understand the brownish looking outside you are reporting. The outside surfaces of my exhaust has always remained shiny (until the car needs a bath anyway).
