New owner of the beast! Have some questions.

Just got my M5 2 weeks ago and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. What should I do?

I have an appointment tomorrow at my local BMW dealership to get the problem solve.

1. Is it necessary to change the oil every 5,000 miles with Redline oil? I guess I'm used to it on some of my cars.

2. Which parts shop has a good reputation? I just think that the parts for our cars are well-over priced. If I only have some spare time I can make my own. (turbo manifold, twin turbo set-up, complete Motec M880 with NTK UEGO wideband O2's, ...you get the picture?...hehehe).

If you guys have any advice you can give me, I'll truly appreciate every info y'all going to share. Thanks. Here for y'all

Interesting mix of automobiles you have! Don't expect the same price/performance gains from M5 add ons. There are some super charged M5s in the works but no turbo kits so far. Besides with a turbo, you'd loose that smooth build of low RPM torque. To answer your questions:

1. The BMW factory synthetic goes up to 15,000 between changes. You'll use a quart every 2000-3000 miles anyways (more on early 2000 built engines). Some guys change it "in-between the lights" at 7500 miles as well.

2. Can't really answer that since mine is still stock but the big names are Dinan & RMS. Lots of companies do chips & exhausts. The best bang for the buck is apparently the Dinan 3.45 rear end.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look through Dinan and RMS and see what they offer.

Does the engine usually runs rough when the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on? It feels like the engine misfires...oh well...I guess I have to look at the plugs.

Has anyone tried running a 100+ unleaded octane fuel and what numbers did you get on the dyno? With or without chip.

What size injectors does the stock have? Has anyone find out if it's low or high impedance?

The bottom line, I hate OBD II's. It's good for stock but not for extreme upgrades.

Please forgive me if I'm asking too many questions. I just wanted to know if anyone had done all the requested subjects I was asking. I don't really want to get in there and find out myself. Thanks.

The SES and rough running I would guess can be traced to a bad cam or VANOS sensor, so you should have this looked at right away. Your car should still be under warranty (I guess it depends on mileage) so you shouldn't have to pull the plugs or do your own diagnosis, unless you want to, of course.

One other thing to check on the SES and rough idle:
Mass Air flow sensors.

They were the cause of exactly what you're describing on my 2000 M5.

This was difficult to diagnose, as BMW diagnostic computer checks the two Mass Air Flow meters separately. Interestingly enough, when they did that, each passed.

When the tech rigged the diagnostic computer to test them together, they failed.

The changed them both, and now the car is perfect. No SES light, and Smoooooooth idle!

Check engine light could be as simple as ...

the gas cap is loose. I've been told it must be tightened until it "clicks".

If the SES light comes on and the car runs rough then the engine might be in one of 4 limp-home modes. If particular failures are detected then the computer limits the speed of the car to protect itself (and you).

I have the tech data at home, I'll see if I can remember to post it sometime soon.

I checked it already and it's good. Right now the car is in service at Bob Smith BMW in Canoga Park, CA. Hope to get it back soon with problems solve.

Several people have tried higher octane fuel with very good success. I don't know of anyone that has made a dyno run other than Steve Dinan. He reported something around 10-15 HP gains by using 100 octane. The chip shouldn't make any difference vis-a-vis octane since the car will advance the timing with the stock chip. I can personally vouch for a nice kick in the butt-o-meter with 100 octane fuel.

I didn't expect the stock ems can advance ignition timing with matching correct duty cycle of injectors or fuel map when using 100 octane fuel (unleaded).
