My **** doors (I think) are creaking like crazy at slow speeds. I went to the dealer bought some Gummy Pfledge (sp?) and put it all over the seals. Same thing, creaking away. Any ideas?
I put it on the door seals all the way around. I don't think it's the seals ?? What else could it be ?
I took my 98 540i back to the dealer at least a half dozen times complaining of the creaking and they eventually replaced all the door seals. It only helped marginally.
I notice the problem also in my M5, but it doesn't seem as bad.
My 98 didn't really get objectionable until after about 3 years, 25000 miles, so I think there is something wearing, or possibly the whole car loosens up and flexes more as it gets older.
At one point, BMW issued a service bulletin for the "flocking" material (I'm not kidding) on the seals used prior to 98 on the 5 series door/window seals.
All of us with E39 M5s surely have the new seals.
I've pretty much given up on this as one of the few negatives of the E39. I'm finally convincing myself to just turn up the DSP stereo, downshift, and nail it to the floor... the creaking is no longer apparent!!!
Let me know if there's a cure... I haven't heard of it yet.
Same here. I just always drive with my stereo on now. I think it's just a "known problem" with the e39s. Sucks, doesn't it? Perhaps there is an aftermarket door seal that is more durable out there?
One thing they did that I am not sure I like, is that they tightened the door buy moving the striker plate in a few mm inward. This quieted the niose but now you have to close the door with a little more force. It may be a fine balance where you can get it to stop the noise and not have any increase in effort.
Jason and I were discussing this very point the other day on his car. Apparently, a rarely used rear door was squeaking. He took it in to the dealership and they replaced all four door seals under warranty. According to Jason it fixed the problem. Question now is, for how long.
I have the same problem...except that i also have the split rear seat and that was creeking too so i lubed that up and it helped a little but I was just wondering the other day how to get rid of the rest of the noise.
