Exclamation Are people buying "experienced" M5s?

Not that I'm really in a hurry to sell my car, but I actually expected to see some interest for it fairly quickly. I posted it for sale here and at bimmer.org, and also listed it on cars.com.

Anyone bought a used one? I'm asking $75K for an Avus Blue / black exclusive M5 with 12K miles. I will consider any serious offer, but really want to get more than $70K. Am I being unreasonable? I haven't seen ANY M5's listed for much under that, and they had higher mileage.

I just don't understand. You can get all the new M5s you want in the Atlanta area for MSRP.

Are they on the lot at MSRP? Or do you have to wait?

Are buyers willing to purchase a used 2000 or 2001 model if they can save a few bucks AND get it immediately?

If you were in the market for an M5, how much lower would the price have to be to interest you?

Steve:

Let's see Sunday NY Times auto section:
NY: 2000 Carbon Black 7k miles for $68,900.
NY: 2000 White 24k miles for $65,000

BMW of Arlington:
2000 Titanium Silver 4,900 miles for $71,900

I know I saw another one for about $69k too with under 10k miles. I think since the 2001 models came out the 2000 M5's FMV took a hit. I am not talking about California..they are pretty much a different economy out there

I wish you the best of luck but I think people would rather wait to get a new one then pay above list for a used one. That is what I am doing.

Just my $.02.

Tom

Fair enough question.

I don't really WANT to sell it. I'm not trying to get out of hock or anything. The car is paid for, and I have the title. When I got it, the stock market was flying. I could justify buying the M5, and putting some other things on the back burner. Now it's time to attend to those things. I don't want to cash out of the market. I have a strong feeling it will return. So in order to raise cash to tend to some other things (addition on house, upgrade my boat, etc...) I thought I'd sell the car. I hope to return to the ///M fold in 2004 with a 500HP SMG M5 (assuming they make it).

If I don't sell it, I'll just leave those things on the back burner - no big deal.

Got my 00 pre-owned Beast(900 miles) from a BMW dealer in mid-Nov for $70k. They started out asking 80 for it, but after it sat on the lot for 3 weeks they got more reasonable.A few days after I took delivery, they got a new unallocated 01 in, same color as mine which may have factored into their decision to sell low. BTW, the 01 went for well over MSRP.

Ahhhhh, the stock market. Gotta love it

Steve, I think if you go below $70k you'll find a buyer in the Boston area without any problems. If you really don't want to part with it, than I'd say keep it

Trying to establish a used price is very difficult, as you are learning. You can't go by the dealers price, as there is a premium to deal with them. And the ads in the paper are crap, as you don't know what these cars sold for. Try calling the dealers to see what they will buy it for. Then pick a price half way between that and MSRP... that will be a good starting point. Hope this helps.

IMHO- wait it out a little- you want to sell b/c of the market; but b/c of the market the prices are a little lower right now. another interest rate cut, some time, and perhaps lowered M5 production will probably all go in your favor. If you must sell now, then youll have to find a price thats truly attractive to someone who wants a new 01. remember most of the people who "just had to have it" when it came out, probably already have it- now you have the people with patience- so the "have it now" factor isnt as big as when you got yours.

Steve,
Regarding finding a price to ask for your M5, consider using the services of BMWCCA, if you are a member. They have a guy who specializes in appraisals. It's a free service, and he's quite knowledgeable. Good luck.

Well I know all you in the rest of the US are not going to like to hear this, but out here in the "Republic of California", a $10k over MSRP for a MY2000 with under 10 miles is a reality. I am sure there are exceptions to this rule, but not many. There isn't but one dealer in all of Southern California (Crevier BMW) that will sell or order for that matter, a MY2001 M5 for less than $10k over list and most want $15k.

Now I realize that they are having to sell these cars by candle light at this point , but the demand still far and away outstrips the supply and this is true for the used car area as well. This situation will likely continue until they stop bui
