Post License Plate, Please Help

You may remember that I got busted by the Cal. CHP 12/30. Besides the 84mph in a 65mph the copster gave me a fixit for no front license plate.

I need ideas for temp. attaching the front plate so I can get signed off. I want to remove the plate after the fixit is removed.

Please put your idea caps on and help me with ideas.

I do not want to drill holes in my bumper.

Thanks in advance.

Can you not use double-sided sticky pads - in the UK they are used as an alternative for licence plate fixing, instead of screws.

These will leave a mark once removed, but this can be cleaned off with meths and then polished up. If you fix them just before the car is inspected, the glue may not even set, and in which case it should leave less of a mark.

I don't know the US regulations on this - so the above may not be allowable.

Steve,

I did not have the option with the holes in mine. The dealer had already drilled them before I picked the car up. I put two black screws back in the holes and you allmost do not notice it. Lets get together and I will show you if you want to see it yourself.

Did you get in on the B&B exhaust buy?

Mark

This may work....

My teenage daughter's New Beetle came with the front bracket already mounted by VW. NC doesn't require front plates so she wanted to take it off. When I investigated, I found the bracket had long arms extending from its back side, all the way into a lower air opening and affixed to the underside of the upper margin of this opening by two sheet metal screws into the plastic bumper, on the undersurface of the top of the opening. Removing them left no visible mark without getting on your hands and knees and looking up under the opening. As overkill, VW even sold me two body color plugs to cover these holes. Perhaps the VW bracket will fit the Beast. I would check it for you against my M5, but she no longer has the bracket (she's lucky enough to be able to find the car usually).

Before I could stop them my dealer had drilled the 2 holes in the front bumper! I simply removed the plate holder and put the screws back in place - with a bit of "touch-up" they are hardly noticable and, if I had to, I could re-attach the plate holder and plate in a hurry. Not a perfect fix but it will do!

MAH-

I am in on the B&B buy.

I really do not want to drill the bumper. I am interested in the VW mount described as few posts below.

Are you driving with us this Sunday?

If so, see you Sunday. Otherwise would you like to have lunch next week? Give me a call. I will email you my phone numbers. Maybe we can drive north a bit and catch up with Carmen.

I think I know how I will do it.

I will make some straps that go around the bumper. Maybe velcro. I will attach the plate to the straps.

When I do it I will take pics if it works.

Yeah, velcro should do the trick.

See you, Sunday.

I used zipties on my 2002 years ago to attach the front plate after a fixit ticket--thru holes in the bumper to matching holes in the plate. You could barely tell how plate was mounted but Santa Barbara cop would not sign off the fixit ticket...."its not regulation" he said. I had to buy the factory front lic. plate bracket. My $.02. Good luck.
