Angry Lost a Z8 in a bidding war

For about a period of 10 minutes on Thursday I had a Z8 in my hands. I got a call from my brother in PA. A good friend of his runs a BMW dealership there. He called me to tell me that they had a Z8 allocaltion and it was unclaimed. They wanted $160K. By the time I called someone was on the car for $170K. An hour later I got a call back that the deal feel thru and the car was again available but for $180K. I told him I'd take it. I thought I had it!!

10 mins later I get a call from the dealer and I'm told the car was now claimed by a new bidder at $199K. At that point I dropped out.

But I got to tell you for that very short period of time it felt great.

C'est la vie.

I would be a little pissed off if they called my told me a price of 180K and I accepted and then called back 10 minutes later and told me the price is now 199K! If this was an auction then I guess I might understand, but if they gave you a price and you accepted, in my opinion the car is sold.

In any event, I don't think the car is worth 180K. You would do better with a 360 Spider IMHO, anytime you spend that much over sticker on a car I think you are going to get hurt. I heard of one in Michigan a little while ago that was 160K, I don't know if it is still available.

I think we would all agree the car is not worth it in the true sense of what it should cost. It's a question of what's the car's value in time. With only 400 being produced the and the car being sold for $200K today there is no doubt it will be valued significanly higher in the future.

But when you look at what you can get today for $200K there are a lot of other very fast options.

Acutally I was really upset with the bidding apporach. It was fun and that morning I wasn't really expecting to go after a Z8. The opportunity just appeared.

I am sorry to hear that they shafted you like that. I agree with the others. Once they make an offer and you accept it, they should honor their word.

I think even at $130k the Z8 is over-priced. Maybe that is because I am looking at it in relation to the M5. It has the same exact mechanicals as the M5 and is $60k more. Maybe this is more indicative of the M5's bargain price. But are the materials in the interior and aluminum body that much more expensive? I don't think the Z8 is beautiful...but that is my opinion. I think that in terms of elegance, beauty and automotive style...I would rather have two competive cars over the Z8...the Ferrari 360 Spyder and the Aston Martin Vantage Volante. Two of the most stunning open air designs.

Just my $.02.

Folks,

I'm sorry to say this... but the Z8 (IMHO) is NOT worth the extreme markup it is carrying... other than for re-sale of course. I certainly don't mean to imply it is not a wonderful automotive accomplishment on BMW's part?... however, I think the hype on this thing is reaching epidemic proportions and is way ahead of reality!

If I were to spend $180K+ on another toy car, it would have to be a Ferrari!

No flames please?!!

I realize we all have varying views on a cars "value". I believe the car is not worth more than someone is willing to pay for it, no matter what the MSRP is.

I believe that is is an extreme example but, there is a dealership (Crevier) that has a Z8 on the floor in a silent auction. As of a couple of weeks ago, this car was expected to sell for North of $300k same dealership allocates M5s at MSRP, but sells them on the floor for $20k over.

What is a Z8 or a M5 worth? What ever the dealer thinks they can get for them. Allthough there are dealers that will sell both at MSRP.

You can get one at United BMW in Duluth, Georgia for MSRP. No markups.

Here in the UK, the Z8 sells for £ 90,000 inc. taxes which is equivalent to around $ 130,000. The only problem is the allocation is completely sold out. Even at this price it's not worth the extra over an M5.
