Help ---- Used M5 Questions

So .. I placed an "order" for an M5 with my local dealer in May and was told 14-18 months. In the mean time I watch, wait and read this board. Yesterday, I called another local dealer and he told me that today (January 15, 2001) he was getting in a "Used" M5 in my color choice -- Imola / Black!!! It has 2000 miles on it and the guy that bought it wants a Z8 (Don't we all). Anyway, besides talking to the previous owner (if the dealer will give me that info), I have the following questions:

What should I pay? I was more than willing to pay list for a new M5, but have NO idea when it comes to a used one.

Given my current place in line, I'm looking at late 2001 / early 2002 for a new 5 -- Should I wait?

What should I look for (problem wise) -- if anything.

Any other thoughts, insights or advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys -- I love this board -- and a belated happy and healthy new year to all

Imola,

If this is the color combination you are looking for, I would take the used one. I am guessing the dealer might take $74k to $77k for it with only 2000 miles. If you want the 2001 look, you can always change the lights out like others are doing on this board.

In the mean time I would look outside of your area if you want a new car. The wait is not 12 to 14 months everywhere. Go to BMWlinks.com and hit new car dealers. This will give you an idea of dealers outside of your area.

Is a couple hundred mile drive worth the shorter wait? Or even a thousand mile drive?

Imola-

Good luck. Hopefully the dealer is reputable.

About one year ago Walnut Creek BMW (northern Cal.), had tennis star, Pete Sampras return his 00 M5 for a new 7 series. It had 2-3k miles on it. I almost bought it, however, they wanted $20k over MSRP. I turned them down.

They called back in two weeks and said they would take $10k over if I would commit with a deposit. Again I turn them down, it wasn't the color I wanted. I was told they finally sold the car for $15k over.

The market is different now. Also, the dealers price may depend on where you live. Santa Clara Valley (silicon Valley) or elsewhere without the high demand.

In addition, you don't know how the car was treated during those initial 2k miles. If your not leasing those initial miles may be very important to you.

Good luck with your decision.

• Imola / Black (My First Choice)
• 4 Months Old
• 2,200 miles
• + Power Sun Shade and Split-fold Rear Seat
• All paper work ok
• Owned (and babied) by an "eccentric" with several exotics that wants a Z8
• Not my regular dealer (about 60 miles away) but my father-in-law got a 540 from them last year and said they were terrific.
• I pick it up this Friday at 10:30 AM
$74,500

Tell me I did ok guys.
