Post Voice Recognition installation details

I just installed the voice recognition module. A couple of suggestions for the mechanically challenged (like me):
1. the blue connector may have a jumper on it. The jumper looks exactly like the blue connector on the top of the VR module. The actual connector is the top part- the part connected to the cable. This part has a white u-shaped lever. If you move it down, away from the cable, it allows you to pull out the connector from the jumper. Once you insert the connector into the VR model, reverse procedure and move white lever up to lock connector into VR module.
2. The bracket can best be installed if you remove the CD player (not the NAV player on top, but the music player in front). You can do that by unscrewing the 2 phillips screws on the right side of CD player (the side facing the passenger compartment). Then lift and pull the CD to release it from the mounting bracket on the left side...no need to unscrew anything there.
3. The mounting bracket mounts on 2 stems (bolts) already in place - just insert onto stems and attach nuts. Then mount VR module, and reattach CD player.
4. Once all is back together, hold down "speaking man" button on steering wheel for a few seconds and you'll hear female voice and see "Voice Recognition" displayed on dash (where you normally see the computer messages that you can toggle through by pushing end of stalk on left side of steering wheel).
5. Say "Dial number"; wait for female voice to prompt you to say number; say 3 or four numbers (she'll repeat and put on display where the words "Voice Recognition" appeared), when finished number, say "dial number" again.
6. Question: how do you program names in phone book? I got as far as putting in name and phone number, but you must then say something to actually fix it in program. When I tried to use programmed name, voice said "phonebook empty".

I spent about half an hour looking in the boot of my brand new 2001 last night and cannot see the blue connector. Although others have installed the voice recognition without the phone, I think you do need the phone wiring (standard in the US? it isn't in Europe).

Can anyone confirm this? Those of you in the UK who are currently waiting, maybe you'll want to add "phone pre-wiring" to your options. If I remember right, the CD player pre-wiring cost about £20 so hopefully this will also be cheap.

I'm going to ask how much it will cost to get the wiring fitted - probably going to be expensive in terms of the labour involved... If any of you do add it as an option, please let us know how much it costs.

ciao

Could you guys post the part numbers again? I want to do this mod myself.

BTW in the last 7 years I hardly ever used my car phone. But since I put in the BMW phone and have the address book function/handsfree stuff working, I call people all the time now. This option is making miserable the life of the contractor who is putting up my new shop.

IJAM:

the connector is there. I did not find it in my 2001 right away, either. You have to remove the NAV CD drive to get access.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Gary, but I just went down to the garage again and I definitely don't have the connector. I also had a look at the panel where the mic is supposed to fit - I do not have a grill for the mic, and when I opened it up there was no free connector there either.

I'll have to see what my dealer is going to charge for fitting the wiring...

ciao

I just got my VR module installed at my dealer. It took my mechanic all of 15 minutes to get it in and operational.

Pretty cool! I played a little on the drive back to the office.. I really like the NOTEPAD function! anyone know how many notes can be recorded before it fills its memory buffer?

Also, does anyone know if this thing is compatible with the new CTP-8000 phone about to hit the market?

TIA!

I just finished installing the VR mod in my 2001 M5. I am extremely pleased with the functionality so far. However, I surmise that the items in the "help narration" only scratch the surface of its capabilities. I particularly like the "Dial Name" function and now use my phone much more readily.

Has anyone checked to see if the manual is available under its own part number? The M5 owner's manual does refer to a separate manual and I know that if you wish to replace a lost owner's manual, it is available through the parts dept. (Lost one for my old M3, once upon a time.)

Are you all using the BMW 7000 phone with the voice activation? Will it list the names/numbers on the nav screen? If so, I was lied to. They said that will only be available with the 8000 phone. Does anyone know the difference between the 7000 and 8000?

I don't think they were lying.. To date BMW has not officially support the VRU on the E39 in the US.

Starting with the CPT8000, BMWNA will support the Voice reco units on E39.

See my post earlier in teh week re the 8000: www.bmwm5.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002207.html
