Help ---- Used M5 Questions

So .. I placed an "order" for an M5 with my local dealer in May and was told 14-18 months. In the mean time I watch, wait and read this board. Yesterday, I called another local dealer and he told me that tomorrow (January 15, 2001) he was getting in a "Used" M5 in my color choice -- Imola / Black!!! It has 2000 miles on it and the guy that bought it wants a Z8 (Don't we all). Anyway, besides talking to the previous owner (if the dealer will give me that info), I have the following questions:

What should I pay? I was more than willing to pay list for a new M5, but have NO idea when it comes to a used one.

Given my current place in line, I'm looking at late 2001 / early 2002 for a new 5 -- Should I wait?

What should I look for (problem wise) -- if anything.

Any other thoughts, insights or advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys -- I love this board -- and a belated happy and healthy new year to all

That depends on how bad you really want the car right now as opposed to waiting in line for the MSRP car later on?? BTW: My BEAST is Imola with black Nappa leather and titanium trim!! Excellent choice!!! You will love it!!!

Depending on what part of the country the dealer/seller is in?... this car with 2000 miles on it would probably fetch at least $80K. My dealer in Houston just sold an Imola car with 300 miles on for $82K. This is just about $10K over MSRP. Again, this will depend on the dealer and how hot the market is for used M5s in the dealers area??

Again, this depends on how bad you want a BEAST? It looks like if you wait in line, you will be taking delivery of a 2002 model car. You have some soul searching to do??? Be ready to pay a premium ???$$$ if you decide not to wait. However, there are occasionally (given the current stock market situation ) some cars that become available at MSRP right away... watch this board religiously for these when they arise!!

I would have a "good" M5-literate mechanic check out the car? You would want to find out (if possible) how the car was broken in? The guy that bought it new could have possibly trashed it during breakin, which would not be good in the long run for oil consumption?!!

I would also look real closely at the brakes and rotors for signs of brake abuse during breakin?.. Look for black streaks on the rotors possibly indicating severe braking conditions?...

Another tell tale sign of abuse early on is the clutch?.. does it slip between gears on hard acceleration??

A good mechanic will know what to look for? Let me know if you want to discuss this with my mechanic?... he is one of the best there is!!

Let us know what you decide?.. and if you have any other questions? don't hesitate!

ImolaM5,
In Des Moines, IA there is an Imola with red/black. It is a 2001 model with PDC and I really don't know what else. It is brand new and selling for sticker. Contact Jim Weaver at 800 733 4808. I know it is not your interior choice but better than waiting 18 months. I waited almost 18 months and it about killed me. The time you have in the car is incredible and should be experienced soon and as much as possible. Good luck in your whatever you decide.
