I just wanted to share one of my experiences at a track, since I actually have pictures this time.
Overall, it was a blast! If you haven't had a chance to take the M5 out on a track, do it! It is very predictable and actually hard to get into trouble with. I actually scared myself more with the traction control on than with it off. At one point, the backend completely slid out because the traction control cut power so harshly. With it off, I found that it would not slide, even while full throttle through the turns. I did completely destroy my front tires though; I guess too much understeer! I can't wait until next year! Here are some pictures of my car and some others of wrecks that occured!

Is going through tires (front ones at that) and brakes common for a day or two at the track? Should I expect to have to replace tires and pads if I run it pretty fast?

Of you're overdriving it and understeering, a lot you'll eat fronts, especially if you're running oem sizes. Generally a set of properly sized DOT R-compound tires should last at least a few track days. Brakes will depend compounds, tires, driving style, and track.

Stock pads will not last through a weekend of tracking. If there's only one thing you can change, get race brake fluids, followed by competition pads. Summer extreme performance tires and race pads will last you through the season. Uneven tire wear is indication of inflation pressure or driver error, you always want to rotate the car just enough to keep all 4 tires near their limits in the friction circle. It's easier said than done!
