Driving through water... stutter, stall, misfire

Hi All,

I drove through some water the other day (maybe 4-5" deep) in a development that I am unfamiliar with during vacation. Car was running fine on the 750 mile trip. Went through the puddle and realized I had made a mistake..... Parked the car and didn't return to it for about 4 days. Fired up fine this morning, then started stuttering after 5 min. acting like it was headed for a limp mode session. Got to a grocery store. Parked came out 20 min later and it ran fine. Started again and CEL. I pulled the following Codes:

62, 63 (??), 90,91 (fuel pump/delivery system) 0d, 0c(oxygen pre cat sensors), d1,d2,d3,d4,d5(misfires)

Cd, Cf, AE

I ordered some new 02 sensors as these faults would lead me to believe that either they are causing the issue (waterlogged/flooded) or are on their way out anyway. Also ordered fuel filter.

'03 with 75k original MAF's and Plugs (sitting on my desk at work in NY....)- original O2 sensors and fuel filter/pump. Air filters are dry... I checked just to be sure.

A friendly neighbor suggested the "distributor cap" but realoem.com either calls it something else or this car doesn't have one.

I'm over 100 miles from a BMW service center in the middle of nowhere coastal North Carolina. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The air intakes have drainage and low points in them so that the air will be more willing to pass through while gravity lets the water fall lower than the intake above the filters, but if it is severe it is a possibility, just not probable.

I would think that bad O2s wouldl not stall the car but rather kick it into a failsafe mode as you were saying, but I really am not sure the water is the culprit, as 5 inches isn't extreme. No crankshaf sensor code (10)?

It is interesting and, yes, your car left the distributor cap behind with the tape deck. . . Oh wait, you have a tapedeck. Umm, well left it with the 8 track?. . . anyhow. No distributor.

Surely it is along the right timeframe for 02s, but I don't know if they are the cause. The gurus will be by shortly and enlighten . . .

Check the O2 sensor CONNECTORS under the car...connections are housed in little plastic 'blocks', need a 10mm to open them. Detach and reattach a few times to clean up the contacts

Clear codes. Drive to operating temp- 25+ miles. See what returns.

Do we need to ask if this is a totally stock car? OE intakes, etc, etc?

I have run through 8 to 10" deep giant water puddles without issue (no choice really, flooded underpass on the highway with nowhere to go). Water is likely not your issue unless your intake is down by the fogs.

I am going to suggest it is a maf issue even though everything is screaming fuel pump issue. I will suggest unplugging the Mafs and driving it around the block. Maybe rough off the bat but might improve after a couple of miles. If this helps then you will likely be able to drive it home. The O2 sensors issue might be a wrinkle that will stop this from being simple.
If that does nothing then we will have to show you how to jump the fuel pump relay for another test.

I've fried oxygen sensors by driving in a torrential downpour with deep puddles. It was one of the fronts...I'm guessing the connectors are not 100% waterproof, just water resistant.

Or maybe they are blazing hot, and then the Immersion in water cooled them too quickly?

One issue is that we have no clue if those are all active codes. the DTC reset is a good starting point since he documented the codes. As I believe the car is currently running. (maybe not right this second, lol)
