ActiveAutowerks tune?

Hey Guys,
So its time for a new tune for my car! I'm pretty excited about it, but have heard from a few different places that it can get expensive. I would prefer not to dyne tune the car since it can be pretty hard on our cars and cars in general. I've been focusing on the Evolve stage 3 custom tune, but evolve does not have any retailers up here in MN where I live. Has anyone heard of/ tried an Active Autowerks tune? I'm not even sure if they have one for our car but I read a thread that says they do custom tuning as well.

AA is a very reputable shop. But they don't spend much time on the E39 anymore. If you check their website, they are more into the newer cars and more of a 3 series crowd than the 5 series (M or otherwise).

I would go with Evolve. The tune can be downloaded/uploaded by computer, not sure why you need a retailer. I thnk Jamie is the representative (tacoma 330i on the board here). These guys are tremendous to work with, they are both business people and E39 M5 enthusiasts.

BTW, nothing wrong with putting the car on a dyno. It doesn't hurt the car, it is good to go for a few WOT runs, moreso on the S62 than other motors. It is not needed to tune the car, but it is a reliable way to measure the changes pre and post tune, as well as spot other performance issues.

Regards,
Jerry

In my opinion a car with your mods requires a "custom" dyno tune. Your wasting your money if not because your not getting the most out of a cookie cutter tune or it may not be safe.

Go with evolve, they don't need to be at your front door, becuase you will swear they were by the way that they will serve your needs. Ask me how I know.

They will send you a cable you will plug into the car and a laptop. you will download their software (which BTW will allow you to read your DTCs too) and then it will read your current file. You send it to them, they send it back and you load it up!

Even the description sounds more complicated than it is. You won't regret it, and I know they will be willing to answer any questions you have

edit; btw, custom tuning is also an option through evolve fwiw

Yeah,
Before I do anything on a dyno, I will need a new guibo. I really am liking the evolve, but I believe a tune should be 700-$800 max for software, they add the additional costs into the cable etc, so I'm just weighing my options. It is not cheap, but I think it should really help the car out a lot. I think I will have to drop money no matter which direction I go with this...

Agreed, it is expensive.

Problem is, they seem to have the best software currently for a MAFless tune. So while there is a healthy profit, they did spend a fair amount of time developing their software. They need to recoup some of that over time.

But perhaps even more importantly, they can make adjustments for you based on feedback (dyno runs). Most tuners would charge hundreds of dollars for that. Evolve builds it into its base price. So if you do a couple of sets of dyno runs, I think the software is very competitively priced. Great service, great initial tuning and great follow up car with tweaks for your particular car.

Value is a judgment call.

Jerry

factor in the cost of not having to replace your MAFS (assuming you'd go Alpha-N).

Ditto the previous responses. Looking at your current mods, you presumably put a fair amount of money into your car. Do you really want to save a couple hundred dollars on an inferior tune and always wonder what your Beast could have driven like with arguably the best tune out there for our cars? It almost sounds like your ego is keeping you from the Evolve tune instead of your wallet. Yes, the decision should not be made on a whim, but the reviews on this board for all the tunes made my decision clear on which one to get. I haven't installed mine yet because my car is in the shop. I particularly paid attention to the reviews where people switched from some other tune TO Evolve and liked it so much better.

Yeah I actually just purchased the car with the mods already on it...I spent more than I wished to but its been great so far.....so it has nothing to do with my ego. More importantly, the MAFs are there for a reason, Evolve said so themselves....I know the mafless tune is appealing, but I prefer to keep them if I can. I know, Evolve are the best.
