Weird "Supercharger" sound in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear? Videos attached

I have a bone stock 2000 E39 M5.

I've noticed a whining sound in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear which can be heard outside.

I have no modifications.
  • I've recently changed the gearbox oil to Royal Purple Synchromax
  • I've recently changed my rear diff oil using OEM BMW fluid with +FM
  • I have recently had my clutch changed 1000 miles ago...

I don't mind the sound at all. My only concern is something is going to blow up and leave my passengers stranded.

Any suggestions would be great.

Search using keywords: "fan clutch", "newspaper"
If you pass that test, and it only happens under hot ambient conditions, then file it under normal behavior.

Okay so i gave the fan a wiggle and it seemed to be fine.
As for the rolled newspaper trick, i'm not sure if i did it right but this is what i did anyway.

Does it look okay to you?

What? I read on the threads that the car has to be at operating temperature?

Pretty sure only US spec cars have the clutch safety switch... and that can be disabled with P.A.Soft:

Coding out Clutch Depression Switch Start requirement

Man, I was expecting to hear an RK supercharger blast you to the moon! lol

I coded out my safety switch on accident, and it caught me off guard one day! Startled the piss out of me!

The way I understand it, the clutch fan will have more friction when it is cold, so until it runs a bit, it will be more connected to the pulley. Once the fluids in there warm a bit, then it will be much less connected and freewheel on the pulley until it is hot enough to begin engaging more and more, to finally cool down by the amount of air coming through and cooling it and the water in the radiator core.

Dimi, if you hear the whine all the time (but in 4,5, and 6 there is more and more road noise) then it could be locked up. One of the problems people have seen. This means, you would hear it sitting in your driveway.

If you had to say "it is coming from ______," what area of the car would you fill in the blank with?

Is it coming from the engine bay? below you? Does the pitch of the whine change with the engine speed, or does it change with road speed??

Thanks mate. It's dfinitely coming form the engine. It sounds like a "turbocharger on a cold morning". So it doesn't have the "sssssssssSSS" whistle noise, it's more a low pitched sound like a siren.

The pitch will "heighten" as the RPM's increase. And it can be heard from outside.

Basically if you try to mimic a siren by blowing out with your lips. Like a woooooOooooo sound
