DIY $3 Oil filter housing bolts

Like probably many of you, my M's oil filter housing was not actually attached to the bracket, as the rubber damper between the housing and bracket had sheered. I learned cost of replacement bolts were in the double digits, each, and decided I could do better.

Picked up two M6 Bolts (don't remember how long exactly) and two grommets from the local hardware store. Removed the old ones, which they screw back out as the bracket is threaded (imagined for a while that there was a nut on the bottom, after trying to undo it for way too long realized it was part of the bracket..)

The rubber of on the mounts had stuck to the bracket and it took some persuasion to unglue it, once that was accomplished, they threaded right out.

Placed grommet between filter housing and bracket, tightened bolt down so that all was snug. Will check back in a few to make sure it is not wiggling itself loose.

This was my first oil change since I have owned this car, added 7qts or so of Mobile 1 5w30 , noticed the engine revving a bit easier, bit more power, and slightly louder.

Makes me wonder how long the old oil had been in. (owner told me it was changed right before i bought it...) Will do a UOA after 3-4000 on this oil and see how she is doing.

First off, very cool. I need to learn a bit more about this as the PO has receipts from an oil filter bracket upgrade of some sort. So the part that wore out was a rubber dampening unit, but you fixed this with bolts and rubber grommets?? Interesting.

On your engine revving....if the PO had filled it with the spec'd Castrol TWS 10w60, and you changed to a 5w30.....yes, you might notice the engine revving a bit more and a bit more noise.

Welcome to the board. Mobil 5w30 is too light for our cars. All 5w30's are not equal. If you want to use a Mobil product, consider 0w40.

Have you driven your car yet? I suspect you will have a hell of a new sound/ vibration when you do!! There are many threads on this, do a search. A bolt with a rubber grommet will not work.

Put your flame suit in as far as your oil goes, it could get rough!

No he specifically mentioned it was 5w30, Mobile 1. He said that only if I felt like racing that I should take it up to TWS.

If I would do anything different on the bolt/grommet combo, I would add a washer for the bolt to oil filter housing. As you can see, the original nut had a built in washer.
So the order would be:

Bolt head - washer - oil filter housing - grommet - filter housing bracket.

Good idea but you will find that the solid bolt method makes a noise. If you search you will find, those that have tried that, you will also find many links to the correct part for about $2 a piece.
Here is a post that should help it at least has the Mcmaster Carr link in it for you.

I have no specific loyalty to Mobile Products so may try Castrol's 5W30 next.

I haven't had any noise from the filter housing (yet). The grommets I got were much softer than the original product, I never actually had any noises while it was loose (didn't notice the bolts had sheared until I changed the filter.

Awesome, thanks for the link. I didn't see any reason that part should cost what it does at BMW dealer.

How is the Mobil 0x40? I was considering trying the Euros 0w50 since I have a case for the Supra in the garage but never got around to it. I currently use, and have been using Total Quartz 9000 5w40 for years.

So you acknowledged the purpose of those grommets is to damping. How exactly is having a solid attachment going to dampen anything? You may as well had left the rubber washers off because they are doing nothing in this situation.
