It has been 5 years since I sold the M5, and the pain has still not subsided. Was time to buy a new car here recently (been driving a 2005 Lexus LS430... in burgundy... for last two years - yikes), and although I really wanted to, just couldn't pull the trigger on another m-car - nor would the wifey go for it if I had actually tried. As large expenses always seem to pop up, and due to the fact that a kid may be in the cards here soon, getting a (mostly) maintenance free, worry-free car made sense. Ended up getting a CPO'd 2010 Acura TL with the 18" wheels and Tech package. I love the interior and the bells and whistles, actually like the rear end, but HATE the front and the fact I am driving a FWD.
The wifey has had a 2009 TSX which she has loved, so we decided to pull the trigger on two cars in the same day. I traded the Lexus for the TL and she ended up leasing a '12 TSX Limited Edition. We were able to sell her old TSX private party for only $4500 less than we paid for it two years ago (bought it CPO with only 6K miles, had 23K when we sold it), so needles to say I have been impressed with Acura's resale value. The deal allowed us to pull out alot of cash from that car, and lower her car payment quite a bit.
Anyway, my V1 has been sitting in a box since I sold the M5 and I told myself I would not use it again until I had another M5, but I think I will go ahead and install it. Been snooping around the Acurazine forums as well to get ideas on how to make the front grill less hideous (am going to have it partially painted as many owners do). Weird being on another forum where they congratulate each other on about beating Toyota Tundras in street races... oh well. Everyone other there does some polite however.
Anyway, I'll have another M5 at some point I know, but I guess its on the backburner (again) for another couple years. Hopefully all the good ones wont be listed on EAG's website for $40K when I'm finally ready to pull the trigger again. On a happier note, the brother in law is going to be purchasing an E60 M5 here soon so hopefully that will help fill the void here in the short term.
Still think the E39 M5 is the best looking sedan ever made... wonder if that will ever change.

Biding my time for another M...
That's a bummer. Daily drivers aside a man should have at least one toy tucked in the garage for weekends. I currently have an '04 R32 and the '03 M5 to keep me entertained. If I had to get rid of them both and just have my '08 Escape I might off myself. For a DD though there's some fun cars out there. Sounds like you got one or two so that's not bad.
FWIW infant and toddler car seats fit in the back pretty nicely. And the built in shades keep the kid out of the sun. Run that past wifey when the kid comes along.
I had sellers remorse when I sold my m5. My wife said she never seen me so depresed in 10 years of being married. Now I have m5 again never selling this one for sure. I guess what is why we all love this e39 m5 so much.
I love my E39 M5 so much.
I had an E46 M3 but when i sold that and bought the M5 i totally forgot about it. Even though my M5 is a bit rough around the edges and needs work done to it, there's something magical about this car.
I've never felt such a "bond" with any of the past performance cars i've owned. But the M5 is truly something else.
It has become my hobby, my companion and a representation of me.
I'm so sorry to hear that you cannot buy another M5 because that is such a shame that you'll never get to do this to your kids...
Hope this isn't too much thread drift, but I am missing my 2001 Anthracite/Black 540i/6 M-Sport pretty badly. All-original cream puff with only 40k miles, wrecked due to owner stupidity, said owner now reduced to lusting over the Autotrader and cars-dot-com ads for M5's (which are much more plentiful than the M-Sports). Since I had previously run through a series of 944's and then the 540i, this time it's wifey's turn, so the insurance check is going toward a new Mini (on order). But in a strange way this is working in my favor, because once the Mini arrives then the "dream car" pendelum swings back over to me (textbook example of employing reverse marital psychology...). And, sheer coincidence, you can buy quite a nice M5 for exactly what a new Mini goes for...I'm just saying.
So to all those with similar E39 aspirations or withdrawal symptoms, fear not, your day is coming!

Yes, that is pretty much where I am now (and where I've been for the last 5 years).

Awesome vid. What you describe as your "bond" is exactly how I felt... my car was basically me on four wheels. I've never taken care of a car like that in my life.

I was actually looking at 535is but the wifey wasn't going for it... she knows the popular acronyms "Bring Money Withya" and "M5= 5x the maintenance."
Before my wife has a baby, I WILL have one. Figure I am building up credits here...
Even since owning the M5, I am convinced it has been a pretty decent financial choice. I am going to own a fun-to-drive car - that wasn't a question. My wife supports that.
Now when I look at what I've got into my m5 (about $18k including $2k worth of repairs), less insurance cost per year than my 2006 Civic SI, and ~19mpg average fuel economy, I find it to be a pretty good choice so far.
I could've gotten a used 3-series or 5-series for $25-$35k, an Audi S4 for ~$35k....
But they would've had less power, been less satisfying overall to drive, and been similarly expensive to maintain very quickly while having a higher upfront entry cost.
As purely an exercise - if I own my m5 for 4 more years and put $2k a year into it, it will still be less expensive for me to own than my 2008 Subaru Legacy GT ($25k upfront cost) has been including it's purchase price.
...
One last thing: I told my wife the other day that now that i've owned this car I've found my true niche - buying heavily depreciated everyday sports cars that you can easily own for 1-2 years and re-sell with minimal depreciation. This applies to the m5, porsche 993 911's, and many others.....if you focus your budget on those cars and find the right one that passes a good inspection, you'll likely spend alot less money over the years while experiencing some amazing vehicles.

When I picked up my '03 after it had been alive for a mere 5 years and 3 months for SIXTY-SIX percent off MSRP I formulated that exact same mentality. I've only bought 2 new cars in my life. A 99.5 Jetta and an 04 R32. Those will be last last new cars I ever buy. You get so much more for your dollars in the used car market. And in the case of my M5 I basically saved 50,000 off MSRP to use for repairs.
Anyone know offhand what 66% off an F10 M5 is? LOL
I missed my '00 CB quite a bit too. Every time I swapped cars I thought about getting another one. Went through half a dozen or more cars in the 8 years since selling it. And then this year finally decided it was time for another one after surveying all the options available for sub $40K and not finding anything else nearly as good overall. So I bought a total garage queen 03 with 49K miles and I'm more than happy with the decision. Best alternative I found was a new S4, but I figure the M5 will cost me a lot less than the depreciation on a new Audi - even with attractive lease rates.
