You are not paranoid if they really will hurt your car...

I'm one of those people who despises handing the keys of my car to anyone. I will sometimes, reluctantly, hand them to my wife who I trust but who is just not used to the clutch action on the m5 and with the best of intentions and effort won't quite drive it smoothly.

Today I give a non-car guy a chance to simply sit in it, start it up, and listen to the exhaust. He started it, let it idle for 30 seconds, and then proceeded to cold rev it in neutral to 4000-4500 rpms.

Now I know this won't truly hurt the car unless some freak thing occurred. And besides, it was already at 90 degrees in the garage and had been circulating oil for those 30 seconds. Nonethless, my golden rule is don't freaking rev the engine cold. Be respectful.

Thanks to this "friend", I'm now set back 10 years in my therapy work to get me comfortable with other people touching my car.

I have a similar issue with my father. He treats all cars as disposable, especially his old E46 and his current (my old) E53 X5.

He wears his keys on a carabiner and they usually trail behind him when getting into cars. The drivers rear door edge of his E46 was full of key scratch marks. Well, I kept telling him to open the M5's doors all the way out to get in without scratching the paint, but he just doesn't listen. Getting into the back seat one day, I hear a jingle and a crunch as 3 keys dig into the paint edge. Never in 13 years did any previous owner manage to do that!

Now we just take his E53 X5 everywhere.

The only people who are allowed to drive my M5 is the technician or other M5 owners.
Friends and family can get f*cked lol.

I trust other M5 drivers because i know that they know how to handle the car and have a good understanding to where everything is.
Everyone else can eat sh*t. Unless it's a real emergency and one of my legs were cut off then yeah, fair enough.

I couldn't agree more with Dimi's comment. I'm so cautious about who I hand my keys over to aswell. When I go to a hotel, I ask the hotel manager whether I can go and park my car in the basement myself or can I just park it on display outside the foyer. Just to let you know! I don't even believe in car washes. They can eat a dick those crummy scratchers!!

Okay, I'm compelled to add this variation on an old joke:

Q: What's the difference between a gorgeous blonde and an M5?

A: You wouldn't lend your best friend your M5.

I'l get my coat...........

I don't hand the keys to anyone except my wife (drives a 1M) or someone trusted to work on the car.

I once made the mistake of letting my idiot brother start up my motorcycle, he pressed the starter with the throttle half open and bounced it off the limiter from cold - never again.

Come on man. Everyone's got that 'Thing'. I frequent my balcony on my apartment, so I can look outside and make sure no kiddies are messing with my car.

Update: As I said, I let my idiot friend start her up yesterday and rev it cold.

Today: My fuel pump was dead when I went to start it.

Coincidence? I think not. M knows when she's mis-treated, and she does. not. like it.
