We don't have sniffers on newer cars here either. Don't know which way is better, but at any rate, I am exempt from testing anyhow! Here it is visual smoke, visual component, OBD port for newer cars, sniffer for older. Funniest part here is you can see a car go in with all sorts of safety issues, and pass the emissions and get put onto the road for another year or two! Craziness

Oh northern CA! Pardon me I'm in NJ. Only Brentwood I knew of was where O.J. lived! Lol.
Yeah maybe if you take the car out on a cooler night and go drive near the water where it's naturally cooler still you can get mid-70's on the t-stat test. If you do then it definately needs to be swapped.
It probably does anyway with the readings you're getting, but I tend to give the temp. sensor a +-1 degree C myself. If you see 2+C or more consistently though it's definately stuck.

Well after a long while, I was able to have time to replace the thermostat. Before the car runs at a cool KTEMP of 74-79C. Now, it is running at a healthier KTEMP of 83-86C in almost all conditions. Drove about 30 miles in mixed riving conditions before I pulled into the smog station. There was a person before me the the smog guys warmed up the car before putting it on rollers. Still failed smog with high HC on both 15 and 25mph. My CO2 is a little lower and there is now a measured O2. I was sad because I also bought other preventative maintenance items (fuel filter, FSU, oil separators) along with the thermostat job and still I cannot drive my car. =(

Next is pre-cat O2 and if it still fails, I guess I will look into indie shops to perform diagnostics on the car.
There recent results:

just a heads up, take your most recent smog to the DMV (get an appointment saves time), they will give you a 60 day temporary permit in CA, then even after that you can request a 30 day extension as long as you don't let the first one expire

this way you can still drive your car

long story, just went through this in CA too, I stil have to get mine cleared in about 20 days or so

please explain the bold item, Im curious

and does that do anything to the engine? also what numbers are you getting running alcohol in the engine on the HC?

Thank you for the tip, I thought DMV doesn't give 60 day temp anymore.

Have you used some injector cleaner? Have you done the simplest thing and taken your car out for a simple cruise on the highway and cruised at 4000rpm for 30 min or so? this will clean up the cats by getting then good and hot. If the car only drives in town the cats can get dirty because they don't get hot enough to clean themselves.
Then there is the vanos, have you done the vanos maintenance?
