Advice on Clutch - Pics included

Been running the CNS Dual mass setup on my car for a couple of years, covered around 10,000 miles and clutch started slipping around 2000-3000rpm and also started juddering and vibrating.

I noticed an oil leak so pulled out the tranny and it was the crank seal which has gone. Currently replacing it, but i wanted too get an opinion on the state of my flywheel/pressure plate.

I am replacing the clutch disk regardless as i have a feeling it has soaked in oil, and i do not believe i will fully be able too remove all of the oil.

Im wondering if the flywheel should be resufaced? Also if the pressure plate needs to be replaced or if its ok to run with???

The car is supercharged, and i drive very hard most of the time, but never slip the clutch or ride it.

those are some serious heat marks on both the flywheel and pressure plate for only 10k miles. once you feel the clutch slipping do you lift or stay on the gas? is the surface still smooth or do you notice groves and imperfections?
i guess try replacing the clutch disk for now and hope it works but i have a feeling you might need a new pressure plate as well.

Thanks for your reply. Generally when i feel it slipping i lifted of the clutch but but it has been happening for quite a few weeks so slipped a few times now. The surface isnt smooth, it does have small ridges on the sufaces, not deep, but slight on both the flywheel and pressure plate

Yup Toast, imo

I would look at it this way...

if that was you brake disc's (rotors) and pads what would you do?

you got to look at time (yours) and part costs added together, say you go with that presure plate and flywheel, box it all up and you have problems the slightest of heat warp on either part and you are now doing a second strip down and replacing anyway

is it worth taking the chance all will be fine seeing as you have the SC and a leadfoot?

Totally agree with you on that one mate good advice. If it was the brake disc i would replace, but they are a lot cheaper but nevertheless I will be replacing the lot. I guess i just wasnt expecting too have to replace the whole kit 10,000 miles down the line, but no fault of the CNS kit just down to the oil seal, i should have done the seal originally when i installed the kit. But lesson learnt. Thanks for your advice

If an oil leak was causing the slipping the clutch would not show that kind of wear or heat.

Ok any ideas what would? If the clutch was slipping due to the oil leak, would the slipping not cause this kind of wear/heat?

I would bet that either the clutch was overpowered or the pressure plate was not functioning properly. That is showing a lot of heat, and a clutch bathing in oil does not generate a lot of heat.

Here are some pics of a clutch which was seeing a lot of oil (the culprit was not a rear main seal, but something very similar). A moderately high horsepower car with about 7500 miles on the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate.

Bellhousing (that's an oil leak ) :




Clutch disk - no heat, worn from slipping in the oil:



Flywheel - dirty but basically brand new (note you can still see the factory machine marks):



Pressure plate - looking brand new:



Amazingly that car showed very little signs of a problem, but that is another story.
