I would bet that either the clutch was overpowered or the pressure plate was not functioning properly. That is showing a lot of heat, and a clutch bathing in oil does not generate a lot of heat.
Here are some pics of a clutch which was seeing a lot of oil (the culprit was not a rear main seal, but something very similar). A moderately high horsepower car with about 7500 miles on the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate.

Clutch disk - no heat, worn from slipping in the oil:
Flywheel - dirty but basically brand new (note you can still see the factory machine marks):

Amazingly that car showed very little signs of a problem, but that is another story.
