I actually had a different opinion of the "article" in Roundel. It read to me like an advertisement. The problem is Dinan buys too much advertising for Roundel to be objective. There was no mention of price, no opinion on value, no objective viewpoint of the plusses balanced against the minuses of the finished product. And finally, I was appalled that there was no comment whatsoever on the fact that after likely spending a huge sum of money on upgrades, and supposedly increasing horsepower and torque substantially, that measurable performance increases were, in fact, meager. I would have much rather read about a long trip on a great road in the car, and how the upgrades changed the car for that purpose. Which leads me to ask: Why do so many people fixate on trying to make their M5 a better dragster?

IMHO, it would seem that if having the most competitive straight-line street racer was what those M5 drivers were seeking, they probably started with the wrong car. If I was looking for a great street dragster, I think I would begin with a Z06 Corvette and modify that. And, for a total investment of less than sticker price of an M5, you'd be running in the high 10's/low 11's in the quarter mile, and probably attracting more "street action" to boot. And, if you tear it up, you haven't wasted one of the world's greatest cars!

Just my .02¢

zoomin' m5: you make a good point about the fairly gushing article. but remember these aren't hard hitting cnn journalists interviewing a sec of state, but car nuts interviewing a car nut.
and regarding the m5, you take a stealthy fast family sedan and turn it into a great handling very fast still stealthy family sedan and you've got a winner in my book. i don't want a z06, thanks very much. but i'd still like to keep up with one while carrying 3 friends and not looking like a hot rodder.

Z06

I just don't like the looks of the Z06 as much. I'm not as practical as you. I'm not ready to give up my passion yet.

I like all forms of motoring including road racing.

If I were as sensible as you, I probably would not have purchased the M5 in the first place. I probably wouldn't even care about performance. Maybe pottery would be my hobby.

The CAI is required? Well then, fuggetaboutit! What's the point of investing $20k and then having the engine seize when you run into a big puddle or you're behind someone who runs into a big puddle. The CAI will suck up the water and you're finished. And don't tell me I can't drive it in the rain. It would be ridiculous to take a 400bhp car that can travel in the rain and turn it into a 470bhp car that cannot travel in the rain.

I was perhaps unclear in making my point. I personally have no interest in driving a Corvette. I'm just saying that if street racing and straight line accelleration numbers were of paramount concern to somebody, I think the M5 is not the best car for the task, stock or modified. I would think that there are better cars, the Z06 probably being the best of them, that will get you street races, and are less expensive to make them go faster.

I was proposing that the average owner of an M5 probably is more interested in a superior all-around road car, and the "article" in Roundel missed an opportunity to objectively evaluate the Dinan cars as better or worse for this purpose. They just listed straight line numbers compared to stock and declared that all was wonderful, without regard to cost or any possible driveability tradeoffs. Just not great journalism, IMHO.

I read the article and was disappointed in the preformance gains for the buck. Not to mention the risk to the car. Botched job etc.

Steve Dinan must have been chagrinned seeing what BMW had done with the M5 and how that 11:1 compression ratio would limit mods to a lot less than previous Dinan cars.

BTW, I thought I saw a Dinan front strut brace on an M5. According to the article this was not available because of the plenum? I may be confused with another model like the M3.

Norwack claims much higher performance gains but like "Apples" disclosed these claims may not be accurate.
