I actually had a different opinion of the "article" in Roundel. It read to me like an advertisement. The problem is Dinan buys too much advertising for Roundel to be objective. There was no mention of price, no opinion on value, no objective viewpoint of the plusses balanced against the minuses of the finished product. And finally, I was appalled that there was no comment whatsoever on the fact that after likely spending a huge sum of money on upgrades, and supposedly increasing horsepower and torque substantially, that measurable performance increases were, in fact, meager. I would have much rather read about a long trip on a great road in the car, and how the upgrades changed the car for that purpose. Which leads me to ask: Why do so many people fixate on trying to make their M5 a better dragster?
IMHO, it would seem that if having the most competitive straight-line street racer was what those M5 drivers were seeking, they probably started with the wrong car. If I was looking for a great street dragster, I think I would begin with a Z06 Corvette and modify that. And, for a total investment of less than sticker price of an M5, you'd be running in the high 10's/low 11's in the quarter mile, and probably attracting more "street action" to boot. And, if you tear it up, you haven't wasted one of the world's greatest cars!
Just my .02¢
