Name that noise game........

123K on the clock
Car had been sitting for 6 months.
Oil..... not pertinent but mobil 1 0w40 for last 30k
Car has always eaten oil like a big dog. 11/99 build. No emissions problems though
Yesterday I would have swore the sound was coming from bank one.
Today when I made a video it sounds more like bank two and the sound isn' nearly as loud.

Originally was louder so I shut it down and got a mechanics stethoscope (never a good day when thats on your shopping list)
It either goes away or motor drowns out when rpms go up. I can't seem to isolate the sound.

I was originally thinking rod bearing since my housemate was the one who moved it from the street to the garage when I was out of town. I figured he may have revved it cold and spun a bearing. (maybe paranoid me)

Now I'm thinking it may be the lifters from sitting?

Pulled and cleaned timing chain tensioner but I don't believe I have any problems on the front end of the motor. Although the ps pump seemed to have a light tinging bell like sound

I'm not concerned with the vanos diesel sound (Ive grown to like that sound actually)
The sound I'm focusing on is the tick tick tick like a time bomb sound.
Yesterday it was more rhythmic, today it is more consistent.

No peak tool. ( no lectures please, it's on my rather long list of needs )

I'd be shocked if there's not some kind of sounds after sittting for 6 month. Try top it off with fresh gasoline and drive it for a good 30 mies.

I had it close to temperature today but not fully warmed up. The sound had me rather concerned and didn't want to ruin a crank / block.

Thats' what I was leaning towards trying. I just needed someone to blame if it goes very wrong. Thanks. LOL

The car was my DD so it hasn't set this long from the day I got it.

To me it sounds like a stuck lifter -

Have you tried 45 seconds on 3000+ RPM - that usually un-sticks the lifter -

I have to do this 2-3 times a month as my car sits for a week at a time

Hey, blame the internet. I second the idea of try to unstuck the lifter.

You have no idea how happy I am right now.

Yes it was a stuck lifter. I took it for a scoot and when I came back, it sound like a good ole' hummin' cummins.

The tinging bell sound was the washer on the outside of one of the pulleys. I got that resolved and also got to

use the cruise control for the first time ever! (wire was cut/broke on tranny so i soldered and reinstalled)

Give me a month or two and I'll have the second CW m5.

Thanks!

I'm still glad I got the stethoscope. This motor has some interesting sounds.

I'm getting this same problem. My car has been sitting for a few months. Was my DD until I decided to do maintenance on it and fire it up for the first time yesterday. Never a "tick tick tick" noise before and the noise seems to be isolated on just the passenger side of the engine. Kinda loud too. Once I get the wheels on I will give it a spin and see how it goes.
