Have anyone tried installing the city lights in the hight beams?
I am considering putting those city lights in the high beams if it isn't too troublesome. Have anyone tried doing it? Or is everybody just going to buy the 2001 lights instead? I would imagine only US or Canadian M5's that would not have the city lights. Any input would be great.
Serge, I had installed the city lights in my '98 5406sp. I checked the highbeams in the 2000s and they are the same. If you look closely, you will see a indentation in the reflector housing that is a simple drill through for the bulb. I ordered mine from http://www.motorworks.com. Click on the 1979-1979 VW catalog, then search citylights. I removed the rings and inserted the bulbs into the hole that I drilled. Simple wiring to the parking light circuit.
I installed them in my car a few days ago. Very easy installation. Total parts cost was about $50. You tie them into the parking light circuit. They look great, but not a bright as your high beams, so no flashes yet.
City lights are basically only accent lighting. They are very low voltage. You may have seen them on some Jags, where it appears that all four headlights are on, but two are very dim. If you've seen some early pix of Euro M5's they can be seen if headlights are on.

Thanks DrkevM5. Do you know if there's any place that have instructions as far as wiring goes? I am not too good with those electrical wiring stuff and I don't want to screw it up.

1coolvc, the rings serve the same purpose as the city lights. I have a dental colleague in Germany who says they often leave them on while parked for better visibility on narrow streets.
