I just wanted share a few thoughts about the history of the M5 compared to the future prospects.
About 10 years ago the M5 (E34) came onto the automotive scene. It was arguably the fastest sedan in the world. It's 310hp (U.S.) inline six only received competition from it's MB rival...the 500E. The M5 did 0-60 in 5.6 sec, 0-100 in 14.5 sec, 1/4 mile in 14.2@99mph at a price of around $58k.
As astounding as those performance #'s are, the E39 540i 6-speed can easily match or exceed them. The 540i 6-speed can do 0-60 in 5.5, 0-100 in 13.2 and 1/4 mile 14.0@102mph. This is indicative of the evolution of most current production cars. Today's sports sedans have the performance of yesterday's sports cars.
My point is this...in another 10 years will the 540 or highest level non-M 5-series be as fast or faster than our beloved E39 M5? How powerful will the M5 be? Will they make a jump to a V-12 engine...as they did from inline-6 to V-8?
Just some food for thought.
