Ok, so I traded in my 2001 e39 m5 to a local dealer for a e63 M6. I wanted to sell the car privately but once I saw the M6 I could not wait for someone to offer me a good price on a car.

My car had 75 thousand something miles, but I didn't know the exact miles because of the dreaded pixel cluster issue. The manager that looked over the car noticed it as well and when he gave me the final price on what he would offer as a trade-in, let me just say I was not very happy. The manager told me that it would cost a 1000 dollars to get the pixel repaired. So then, trying to get the most money out of my car, I basically said if I could fix the cluster, would he give me a thousand more on the car? And he said "yes"

For a second it occured to me that possibly I could fix it, I've seen DIY's on pixel repair.... but after looking at the DIY posts, I knew this was way out of my league. So I started looking on Craigslist and I happend to find a guy that says he can fix them for 200 bucks. I had nothing to lose(He has a hompage, so I went there as well to read more about him) so I called him up. He was very knowledgeable and we gave the car to him yesterday and it came back today(He says he also does one day services) with pixel repaired flawlessly. It was weird looking at the cluster with no issues, I finally know exactly how many miles I have in my car haha

If any members live near atlanta, I would definitely recommend him to fix your cluster.

I upload some pics to show you before and after. The color on the completed picutre is off because its a camera phone. The color of the pixels are the same.

  • BMW Pixel Repair Yes I sure do and if needed I can send you a loaner unit until yours comes back fully rebuilt. There would be a $60 core charge and shipping would depend on where you live. Please call if you would like to set this up! 404-396-8328 Joshua

I just finished getting a job done by the original guy this thread was made about, Josh. Absolutely A+ service, I shipped it on Wednesday at 5pm, he got around the same time on Friday and I just got it back today on Monday. He had it in and out in the same thing, and he even packaged it 10x better than I originally did.

Dont waste your time at VDO, he charged me 200$ even and it was all set and done.

Not hard at all.

I always disconnect the battery when working with anything electronic on this car. Wait for NAV light to go off before disconnecting battery.

Pop off the trim to the left and right of steering column and you will find 3 phillips head screws (2 on left, 1 on right). There are also 3 torx (T10) head screws up top of cluster. Remove all of these to get black covering around cluster off. You will need to disconnect the fog light switch to get covering loose enough to lay up on dash. There are then 2 more torx (T10) screws on top of cluster to remove.
Once all of the screws are removed the cluster just pulls out.

Disconnect the 3 connections on back of cluster and it will come out.

Takes all of 10 minutes.

Reverse the process to re-install.
