Think just the momentum of moving parts at somewhat higher RPM could pull engine apart like that?

Flywheel bolts snapped when engine seized suddenly.

EDIT: What's top speed in 5th at redline?
About 150 mph... I definitely wouldn't be wanting to shift to 4th instead of 6th.

There is a member Leezamonkey with an in-car track video showing a mis shift which threw him completely sideways, and that was without him even releasing the clutch as he realised the mis shift immediately...and under some duress I must add !

so, i checked out this motor.

My guess is that the motor had a bad bearing, threw a rod and siezed the motor while driving. That shock through the drive train sheered off the >100k mi flywheel.

Also, the flywheel had been ridiculously overheated in the past based on the coloration all the way through the back side of the flywheel's friction surface.

Sound like a car that was just abused and not taken care of at all..a good lesson here..Cosmetics are all well and good, but if you want the car to live long, you must pay attention to the mechanical maintenance as well..Great CSI work guys.

Agreed on the signs of abuse, Matt. When your pressure plate looks like this, you've been rode hard and put away wet.

Computer still broke. I can't multi quote.

I understand what you are telling me. I can imagine rods flying everywhere in extreme conditions.

If the owner just bought the car, cruising at 55-60mph (5th gear ~ 2,500rpm/6th gear ~2,000rpm) shifted in to 2nd gear by mistake, I don't think this would happen.

I feel terrible for the owner since I don't think he or she was the cause.

Wow, that flywheel coloration is surreal. That should be in a motorsports museum on a pedestal

Should be easy to check, and get Adam's hands dirty with a rod bearing DIY, you know there's demand for that in the NorthEast.

Now that you say that, I think I'll run to the local home-improvement store for some rock salt and floor tiles.

Don't use rock salt, it is the wrong gauge at least then you would be accomplishing something
