Never said it wasn't, we've just seen better results, more flexibility and lower overall costs using standalones.
I agree on the flexibility part.
My personal S85/E39 conversion will use a stock ECU,
Is for me more cost efficient than a stand alone and has enough tuning possibilities(full built n/a engine).
The car is for me just a daily driver, for a full track toy would go for a stand alone.

just buy the damn e60, that what i did much easier, lol. i wasn't sure i'd like the car after having 3 e39's but i do. e39 is an awesome car but once you get in the e60 and have all the newer technology ie EDC, MDM, SMG, I-DRIVE etc you won't want to go back. plus prices have dropped like a rock on these. gas mileage really isn't that bad compared to the e39 either. wrenching on the S85 is going to be a lot harder though as the engine is packed in there and not a lot of room to spare.

But to each his own.
What's your plan of attack for mating the ecu with the 39 chassis?
Stock ECU is also how I'd want to go, if it's remotely possible... if for no other reason to have the car be street legal.

I have been wondering when you were gonna come online,i knew you would come up with something!

I only keep bringing this up because, as far as I know, I'm the only one who has tried (and continued to try) both approaches, and the stock electroncis on the S85 are just not very good outside of a complete S85 chassis. The cost in reflashing and updating can be fairly high if you don't have someone who has a full "standalone" flash written already. And every time we have to tweak it, it takes hours. Just not worth it.
And stock or not, it won't be street legal. You can't get the OBDII reporting to spoof a VIN number, even if you could remove all the readiness codes.
