Powerchip and Evolve just got some REAL competition, tuning just got opened up

Hi guys

The power of remapping or reprogramming the e39 is presently in the hands of a handful of companies

The time has come for the secrets to be passed to the m5 community

This will enable new innovations to be released that are not driven by commercial concerns

The model for putting the power into consumers hands is not new, it is already being done for other makes

For Subaru and mitsubshi, there is a web site Main Page - OpenECU

If there is support on this board, I want to form a group and web forum that is based on a similar concept

The power to map the E39 M5 can be put into our hands, and we can share information on the forum

I would like to know feedback from members to see if people agree generally with the concept, and if others are prepared to offer help

In particular, we need two members in greater London, and two members in the USA that are prepared to be "moderators" on the forum and drive and promote the site.

Those moderators will also be given training in how to tune, a licensed version of winols and a super map pack that will allow the tuned files that are created to be shared on the forum

The training will be done in person, and will be done at zero cost to the potential moderators, no cost for training, no cost for access to the tuning hardware and software

The training will consist not just on how to use the import function in winols, but also how to use the twin OLS300 emulators that allow real time changes to be made while the car is on the road or on the dyno

All four moderators will have a full winols license available to them, NOT cracked versions

This is very expensive equipment that most tuning companies (especially in the UK) don't have access to because the E39 M5 requires two emulators which cost thousands of dollars /pounds each

Simulator Modul

This equipment will be shared by the four moderators

Please note that the site won't be promoting the copying of commercial files, but the site will enable stock readings to be posted to the forum, and one of the four trained moderators will provide a tuned file free of charge

Over time, members will convert the map pack definitions into a commercially available XML based editor like tunercat or ecuflash

This will allow YOU to change all the important maps yourself or let your dyno operator map the car on the dyno

It is hoped that an inexpensive USB flash tool (under $100) will be offered for sale on the site just like on openecu.org, it will be able to program an unlimited number of cars, and is not locked to one car like the cable that Evolve and ESS purchase from a third party

Yes, the flash tools look the same for a reason *

The end user flash tools sold by ESS and Evolve are designed by Mr Guy Frieling and manufactured by Frieling Racing*

http://www.frieling-racing.com/

In terms of the map changes, ANY changes presently offered by the commercial tuners will be offered by the moderators

This includes readiness being set on US cars that Evolve offers but Powerchip does not

It includes sport button memory and fixing the carbon code issue

Maps for 97 and 99 octane UK fuel, and 91 and 93 USA maps are available initially, other variants will be developed over time by moderators and members

We will not be using the flashtool that ESS and Evolve presently purchase from Guy Frieling

Initially, members will be free to use flash-cables that are presently sold for about $30 on eBay

As soon as the moderators training commences, the website and forum will be launched

We do not seek to start any conflict with present or past sponsors on here, in fact we welcome their support and assistance

There will still be a market for people that want the peace of mind that comes with other advantages like a warranty and the commercial tuners like Evolve and Powerchip will still have a following I'm sure.

Their input will be welcomed on the forum because of their experience, but the input will be one of SHARING the knowledge to assist the community free of commercial concerns

For example, Powerchip and Evolve do not presently sell upgrades to suit ESS superchargers because they say they do not wish to for commercial reasons. On the forum, this, and similar activity will be encouraged.

As soon as the website is established, the group will then become a paid sponsor of this messageboard.

If there are members here interested in becoming trained in remapping, please reply in this thread indicating your reasons for your interest

And if you are supportive of the doors to the tuning of our cars being thrown open then I would welcome the feedback

If you are considering remapping or tuning your car, I suggest you wait for a couple of weeks until the site goes live, we are about to change the game forever.

So to summarize, if having a dyno developed map for your car for about $30 is of interest, stay tuned

The E39 tuning market just changed overnight, and we hope you want to become a part of it!!!!!!

There might be pressure from existing sponsors to close this discussion, but as a future sponsor next month I hope the moderators allow free discussion

Again, we WELCOME the current tuners of the M5 to assist the whole community

Oh boy...here we go. ;>

In all seriousness, this sounds fairly interesting. I actually don't think it will really impact sales for most of the commercial tuners out there for the same reason that restaurants can give away their recipes and not worry about it. A comparatively small number of people will trust themselves or what they will view as "amateurs" to tune their rides (especially given the cost of an S62) which will leave the market open. That isn't to say that folks won't do it. People are already tuning cars themselves for a variety of models - look at the LS* community and the whole Megasquirt thing.

Ultimately, the challenge for most people is the effort/time required to build up the expertise to know what ultimately works or doesn't work. For those willing to invest that effort this will be awesome. For those not willing, well, they have all the alternatives they do today.

When open source came into the Subaru world, the market leader in tuning disappeared almost overnight - people really couldn't get away from their locked tunes fast enough.

For the GM world, HP tuners and EFI Live are more appropriate comparisons - they aren't free, but are less expensive than a couple of "professional" tunes, are full featured and are used extensively, but individuals and tuning companies. In those markets there are "professional" tunes out there that are a joke and "amateur" tunes that are OEM quality or better. This thing is only a tool, not the content.

The e39 M5 market is small, so that would be my biggest concern; it would be hard to get a large enough user base to get the ball rolling.

I'm convinced the E39 expertise is no longer at PC. They have since relegated themselves to joke status.

I have the utmost respect for Sal and the work he does. That said, I've made it clear I'm too cheap to be comfortable purchasing his tune.

I am very interested in this development and would love to hear more details.

This is no longer about worshipping the tuning god at one company or a tuning brand, this is about the quality of a file as determined by the members

The feedback provided will be for the product

If people still desire 24hour support and cheerleading for the brand they spent $500-900 on they are welcome to continue on doing that

We are simply offering a near free opportunity built by members, for members

Think a cross between napster and iTunes

This requires a paradyme shift in thinking

Throw cheerleading out the window

If you don't like the file somebody created on our forum, say so

But the feedback is to improve the quality of the file, not to disparage and ridicule people

Forums are full of people that crave conflict, we don't want those people around us to bring us down

This is about being positive and creating inexpensive products that are better than those currently offered

This is not about cheerleading for Powerchip or Evolve, and I would appreciate if the feedback for commercial products is kept from this thread

Who wants to open this up?

We don't need the commercial products when we unlock the black art and open the tuning secrets up

I'm glad others have seen open ecu and the open source products and are excited

There is still room for commercial products to compete against ours, but it will be vbox and dyno PRODUCT testing that it competes on, this is no longer about personalities

Time to invest in used s62s, their value is going to skyrocket.

EDIT: i love open-source tools, and support this fully.

with that said, the fact remains that the s62 is a limited-availability motor and open-source tuning produces an increase in dead motors as a result of bad tuning.

Having tuned my fair share and driven on others' tunes i would definitely pay evolve's "premium". It's well under the cost of a professional one-off tune, and I would argue that's it is better in nearly every way than any other non-OEM tuned car I've ever driven.
