Mercifully I've replaced or improved many of the issues that would otherwise give me reason to list them here.

But, the following remain:

-Weight
-8" front wheels (weaksauce looks/perfomance)
-Touchy throttle and notchy gearbox when cold
-Headers design/performance (so much potential here, yet BMW left us with 540 headers; alternatives cost a fortune)
-The fact that the plenum has to come off for 85% of engine repairs (makes the labor bill at the dealer go up two-fold)
-Headlamp adjusters & xenon projector quality
-No factory AUX-IN for earlier models (makes installing XM radio (properly) an expensive and labor intensive feat)
-Rear shock tower location (because removing the rear tray/deck is a PITA)

Seems like a lot, but most are trivial. When I had my E46 cabrio, however, I could write a thesis on how much I didn't like about it.

The MPG in the city only, as HWY is actually really good when I take road trips, and the weight of the car but that's it to be honest.

Starting car:
Depress clutch, turn key, wiggle sshifter in neutral, release clutch, wait 3 seconds, HIT THE DAMN RADIO KNOB TWICE TO GET RID OF THE WARNING MESSAGE ON THE NAV!!!

This is about it....maybe weight in first gear bothers me.

The NAV system is pretty terrible, even for 2003. Also, the IBUS system leaves a lot to be desired in terms of easy upgrades for the audio (although it can be done, as has been shown here many times).

It's wondering if that noise you hear when you (insert anything here) is a problem and if so how much will it cost to fix? It's also wondering what should be proactively replaced and when (rod bearings anyone?) and what should you just roll the dice on.

I remember a recent conversation I had with the well-respected owner of an independent shop.

Me - "How's everything look? Clutch OK? Brakes? Rear seal? Valve gaskets OK? Thrust arms? Motor sound right?"
Him - "Car's great. Just go out and enjoy it."

After that, it'd be

1) Cost of ownership, for all the reasons already given. But that's a bit like saying you don't like the Love of your Life because she likes you taking her out for the occasional expensive meal and wants a bit of pampering, when you know she's worth it and has some interesting muscle groups.

2) Brakes are only just about up to the job. That was an issue I had years back with the E28 M5; BMW knew about it then, and have had time to get it right since. Fixable with another bucket of cash, so maybe just an extension of 1)

3) Two "clever ideas" that were designed in, but are poor ergonomics. As ergonomics is a major strongpoint for most BMW designs, these stand out a bit:
i) the automatic adjustment of the height of the seatbelt fixing with adjustment of the seat; I don't find the resulting position totally comfortable but I can't change it (I'm about 6'1", but have a long back). So for me, this was an unnecessary automation that has a negative result compared with just leaving the seatbelt height adjuster as a manual slide.
ii) the design of the armrest as somewhere to locate the phone rather than as storage. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time........ And yes, I know that one's pretty straightforward to change (and may have been a buyer option - not sure if it was standard on a UK car).

I'm being really picky here, but I can't think of anything else!
