If Vataam's risks are correct, then maybe you don't do it. Have you had trouble passing emissions so far? I haven't. If you've been passing emissions, then why do it?
Hey Georgia,
I have had problems passing emissions when I got the car, changed the MAFS, and the CATS, and now I get one code stating that the cat on bank 1 is bad.
What is really weird is that the light at times go off and comes back on later right now it is on, and the car drives fine.
Do you have a Peake coder reader so that you can reset the CEL?
In Georgia you can get it to pass emissions if you reset the CEL, but not immediately. The State inspection software requires the CEL light be off a certain number of miles and stops/starts. This is to prevent someone from reseting the CEL and driving around the corner to pass emissions at the testing station. I think the threshold is pretty low, like 50 miles and 10 stops/starts.
I had a similar problem on my 540 that I couldn't immediately fix, and was able to get it to pass after first failing by doing the above. I don't think there's any limit to how many times you can attempt to pass emissions (just like taking the BAR exam).
I'm not sure why you are throwing those codes, but if you've changed the CATs and MAFs, I think you've got other problems. Others on the board here are experts on this stuff and know more than the dealer. They certainly know more than the service rep you are talking to.
If you haven't already done so, I suggest you post a question describing your problem and what you've done to the car and the codes it's throwing. CATs and MAFs are expensive. CATs should last the life of the car unless you have other problems (e.g. misfires). You don't need to keep changing parts, particularly an ECU.

I don't think that is the DME problem the software update is designed to correct. You are getting a fault code. Check carefully for exhaust leaks. If original cat, there should be a weld; if replaced, often you see a simple clamp where the new connection was made. You say you replaced the cats, so double check those connections.
Cats do go bad, but not often, and they don't heal themselves, so intermittant light says probably not the cat.
Oh, and it's not weird that the CEL resets itself. Under certain conditions for certain codes the CEL will do that, if the codes clear. But, I think it's only for certain codes. I'll let the board's experts chime in here. They know far more about the CEL than me.
Just a thought, but have the 02 sensors ever been replaced to your knowledge? Wondering about the Post cat 02s, as you said you've already replaced cats, right?

Thanks Georgia, and the mechanics have told me that as well, once after we changed the CATS and MAFS, the light went off and stayed off for about 450 miles and came back on. But during that time was when I passed the emissions.
For Georgia you have to drive up to 150 miles and then you can retest but as of now, the light will come on before then.
On a side note, I like to say that I don't drive the car as hard as I should the mechanics have told me, and just the other day I drove to Savannah and added some Chevron Fuel injection cleaner with Techron as well.

As to my understanding bibledriver,
They have not been replaced, and I do not get any codes that would reflect them. Or is there a code for a bad O2?
You replaced the CATs without attempting to replace the four O2 sensors first to fix the problem? Did a dealer or an indie do this?
I think you had better get a new mechanic. Now I'm wondering if your CATs were ever the problem.
Do you have a Peake code reader?
No they are very good to me, but I am just going to go ahead and get I guess the Cali CATS and the PRE and POST O2's for the car soon since I did everything else.
Georgia do you have a Peake reader ? I don't have one, and if you do perhaps we can meet some where and run a scan on mine and through the codes up on here and have the experts dig in?
