Will the 16:9 nav unit with the built in cd player from an e46 M3 fit in the e39 M5? The part number I have is 65-52-6 934 410. I have searched this forum and many others and I can't seem to find an answer. I have a 2000 M5 and was looking to do the 16:9 upgrade anyway, so the in dash cd would be great if it would work. Thanks!
As is the rule with just about any modification, anything is possible with enough money and/or hassle. That said, I believe the biggest hurdle is that it's too deep and the HVAC box has to be cut into. This is the case with a lot of aftermarket double-DIN units as well but I believe there is more standing in the way of this particular swap as well. You can pretty much assume that if it were easy we'd see a lot of them. I've seen none.
Oh well, that is too bad. I found a good deal on one and I was getting my hopes up. No wonder my searches on the topic came up empty. Thanks for the info though.
Will not work as-is but a few years ago someone on Roadfly took the the E46 unit apart, combined some parts with the E39 one, and made a functioning in-dash CD player with the on-board monitor.
^ I was going to mention that I also read that somewhere. Heard it turned out good.
