Yet another Cheap exhaust mod
Hi guys,i came across a very simple yet glorious sounding exhaust mod while playing around with my car,i cut 4 square openings(about 10cm by 10cm)on all four rear cans and removed the silencer material, then i closed the openings with some mesh wire, the resulting sound is toxic,at startup and idle its very deep and bubbly but as you pick the revs it changes to a high pitched wail.I have headers, decats, oem h-pipe and oem resonator,Picture is shown below. For those of you who have spare oem cans lying around you better try this!
What i want to know is that does this have any negative impact on the Engine,Power and fuel economy?

I do have my originals laying about and would love to have tried this a couple of years ago before I got my H&S but didn't feel that hacking away at a car like this to be appropriate!
Still well done for trying it but I dare say there is some back pressure lost by doing that, maybe no worse than straight pipes tho?

I'm really not that clever! Just feel that maybe taking the baffles out I the cans opened it up to straight pipe dimensions, and now you have opened them up further, I think its low end power more than anything that it will affect, as I said I'm not that clever ill leave it to someone else to rectify my wrongness!

No different than straight pipes. No negative effect on "back pressure" at all.

How 'bout a video of the sound?
One thing I would do is spray the mesh with grill paint to prevent the rust.

Cool.
The main reason to go a step further and do straight pipes is for weigh savings (those suckers are heavy) and nicer tips.

Pretty certain that would fail the MOT here in the UK as it would allow exhaust fumes into the cabin - rather you than me. Its a low rent mod that has no place on the M5 IMHO

I have to say that years ago I thought about opening up the cans to see what was inside as well...
But, uh, although I might have removed everything - had I done it - - I'm pretty sure I would have then welded them back up/completely closed...
The reason is it is necessary to get the exhaust beyond the rear of the car - so you don't get some of it back inside - and imho - completely closing them keeps the car from looking hacked up so to speak...
I would recommend that you consider a muffler delete - with the tips some board members have used (they have resonators inside the tips) they are also a low cost mod - search and you will find them...
