Tech: need subwoofer wiring help on DSP Audio

Okay audio-geeks, I need a favor. Do any of you know the pin-outs for the 12-pin wiring harness on the DSP/Nokia “subwoofer” bandpass enclosure? I’ve searched www.bmwtips.com to no avail.

        Here's what I'm talking about:

okay, no photos. I just read Gustav's update on HobbyStage's revision to prevent links to posted photos. sh*t

FWIW, the sub only uses 8 pins of the 12-pin harness; pins 2-5 and 8-11. The color-coded wiring is as follows:
        Pin 1 = blank
        Pin 2 = aqua w/ white stripe
        Pin 3 = aqua w/ brown stripe
        Pin 4 = yellow w/ black stripe
        Pin 5 = yellow w/ gray stripe
        Pin 6 = blank
        Pin 7 = blank
        Pin 8 = yellow w/ red stripe
        Pin 9 = gray w/ brown stripe
        Pin 10 = yellow w/ white stripe
        Pin 11 = yellow w/ brown stripe
        Pin 12 = blank

These 8 pins correspond to the speaker-level outputs for each of the two voice coils. In other words, what I’m trying to match the above color combinations with is as follows:
L sub voice coil A; pos
L sub voice coil A; neg
L sub voice coil B; pos
L sub voice coil B; neg
R sub voice coil A; pos
R sub voice coil A; neg
R sub voice coil B; pos
R sub voice coil B; neg

TIA for any light you can shed on this subject.

        Cheers-
        ~Dave

Have you pulled the subs out of the Nokia box to see if the wire colors on the terminals match what's on the plug? If so, there's your answer. If not, we make have to trace them back to the plug intereface to find which is which. I need this answer too, so we'll keep each other posted :-)

        Jeff-

I have not traced it back to the drivers in the Nokia box. I do know that the wire colors change (from photos I've seen posted), but it still should be pretty easy to determine, presuming that the Pos and Neg terminals are so indicated on the whopping 5" OEM drivers.

Unfortunately, the box is back home, and I'm on vacation at the beach (I guess that's not so unfortunate ). I was trying to get this figured out in order to have bass for my tunes on the ride home. Looks like that's unlikely.

        I'll keep you posted!

The question I have for you guys is what are you trying to achieve? I have been slowly trying to figure out a way to tap the wires to add a subwoofer and an aftermarket amp. I was actually going to tap into the wires that go directly to the factory amp. After looking at this thread and bmwtips.com, figured that white wire to be the remote. I still have not gotten a chance to figure out + and -. All I need is 2 wires and I would get a converter to change speaker wire to RCA. That way I could put an aftermarket amp. I actually took the Nokia box apart. Here are two pictures. The question I have is whether you can tell which color (green or green/black) is + or -. Maybe you guys can look closely at the picture of the speaker and figure it out. The right prong is larger than the left but doesn't have a marking for + or -. However the black/green wire corresponds to the larger prong while the smaller prong is the green wire.

        Teutonaddict;
I had this done to my 540i with the DSP system at a shop in Charlotte a few years ago. He used some sort of converter to tap into the system right at the sub connector. A 150 watt amp and twin 8's made a big difference in the bass response. I've heard the best solution is to fire a 10 inch thru a ski pass thru but I never did that.

The shop that did this was Car Audio Masters in Pineville (just south of Charlotte). Their web site ishttp://www.caraudiomasters.com/

Maybe you can contact them for help.

        Hey guys,

Well, wongster, to answer your question, you'd use a line-level converter to add an amp after the DSP amp using the speaker wires for the subs. It converts the speaker leads to RCA which you can use as line-in for any amplifier.

Or, you can do what I'm going to do and buy an amp with built-in line-level converter. I'm gonna get the Sony XM 2150-GSC amp, which has both RCA and speaker-level inputs. Should be sufficient with 150x2 at 4 ohms.

Now, for the wiring. I too took the Nokia box apart this morning, and traced all the wires. Teutonaddict, your wire colors are different from mine, but I believe the wiring will be the same. Still, because of that, I don't know what you called pin 1. So I'm going to start at the top right of the plug (as if you're looking straight into it, and as the amp plug fits into it) and the 6 pins going down that column are 1-6. Then starting at the top of the left column are 7-12. Leads 1,6, 7, 12 aren't used, so we have only 2-5 and 8-11 to concern ourselves with.

        Right column:
2 - Left terminal of right speaker (+)
3 - Left terminal of right speaker (-)
4 - Left terminal of left speaker (+)
5 - Left terminal of left speaker (-)

        Left column:
8 - Right terminal of right speaker (+)
9 - Right terminal of right speaker (-)
10 - Right terminal of left speaker (+)
11 - Right terminal of left speaker (-)

So if you'll notice, each speaker uses 2 pins from each column. Or more to the point, the pins of each column fill the terminals of one side of each speaker. Anybody follow that? :-)

Anyway, that's the deal...lemme know if you have questions, and good luck!

        Jeff

So Mofo, I was wondering how one test if the speaker is in phase? I am not too smart when it comes to testing the electrical parts of a stereo system.
