One Lap of America - 2002 M5 wins in class
I hope this is not old news. In the August edition of Car and Driver magazine in the One Lap of America story, it is reported that in the Luxury Class a 2002 M5 won. It came in an impressive 11th overall, just behind a Diablo. In the same class, the Jaguar S Type R driven by magazine staff members, finished well behind the M5 in 27th place.
I think it's pretty impressive. Read the article, it's quite interesting. I think this is what some members have been referring to as the 2002 M5 winning the best car in the luxury class of Car and Driver magazine.

Wow, rack another title up for the M5. I am very surprised the Jag S type R did so poorly. What did they have to say for the reasoning. I am assuming poor handling? Who one the event this year, I beleive the M3 always makes a strong showing.

I didn't see that one in the latest issue of C&D. I guess I should go back and look.
Thanks for the heads up!

We won the same class last year! By the way the Jag is not 400 hp. They stated that # using din hp. Which is an obsolete method. The true sae # is 388. Plus everybody knows Jags can't handle

What burned me up was the editorial comment that although the Jag couldn't compete with the M5 on the track, it was a better long distance driver.
What a load of crap! Time after time magazines have compared the M5 to all others and have come to the conclusion that for high speed long distances, the M5 bests everone.
I drove cross country in 46 hours, including one night stop. I have never been in a car that is as comfortable to drive hour after hour. And the faster, the better.
Could it be that the text was written by someone that owns a Jag of his own?

i AGREE BART
The S TYpe R is a real disappointment in my book. Ford managed to compromise the rear diff. with something from one of their trucks or something. The outside is unappealing, and it is dog slow. In the U.S. it tested in the low 14s. Tiff from Top Gear didn't like it either.
I think they had to toss Jag. a bone to keep their advertising relationship up or something, so they threw out the long distance cruiser thing. I totally agree on the M5 driving comfort.

The jaguar is nothing more than a souped up Ford Tourus. However you spell it.

Even though we all know the M5 is the best sedan in the world, this recent victory shouts the M5's praises to the rest of the world for the second year in a row. For a car made in 1999 to beat the brand new 2003 supercharged Jag, it goes to show just how a AWESOME the M5 is!
