02' E39 M5 vs 1998 E36 M3 w/ S54 engine

Me and my buddy decided to do a quick pull to see how our cars stacked up

He has a 2002 M5 with a Conforti tune and exhaust

Vs my 1998 BMW M3 with an S54B32 motor + headers + tune + CSL intake

Race is roughly from 80kmh-220kmh

Kinda bums me out how hard it pulled the M5.

Power to weight and gearing..

The M5 is a quick car - Probably 415bhp. A similar car in Maryland (same modifications) did 12.8@108+ in the 1/4 mile. Or roughly 12.8@174kmh+.

But the M3 is 3200lbs vs 4000lbs and roughly pulled 1 car in each gear.

The M3 also has a 3.91 rear diff, vs the M5's factory 3.15. I'd like a re-match if the M5 gets headers and LTW flywheel.

Add headers. Should be about even then.

What do you figure you're putting out with those mods? ~360 crank?

RE: S54 project

I believe "that's my baby" as they say.

He's running the S54 on DTA with full vanos control, and a DBW delete kit of my design. This is the project I've been spending my time on recently making the conversion harnesses, and working towards making it a seamless transplant for the average DIY.

If I had to guess based on other customer's results, and we've got a few of those, on the typical dynojet he's seeing at least 320 to 330 at the rear wheels. We run the redline to 8K, and have a very broad torque curve. E36 however weighs substantially less than a Beast.

DTA now supports the S62, and I believe my DBW kit can be adapted easily to it.

My most successful customer running bone stock bottom and top, pulleys, EPS, custom headers, CF intake has hit 359.1 on a hub mount dynojet (rear wheel hp). YMMV of course, and dynos are best used for tuning an engine, not comparing between different engines/cars/days etc....

(This is the reason I've been hanging in here a lot recently)

Very cool! Thanks for the insight. Makes sense that he's walking an e39 M5 if he's putting out similar RWHP with 700lbs less to haul around.

Love to see the S54 making it's way into older cars. I had an S50-swapped e34 touring for a while and would have dearly loved another 100+hp.
