On ALL engines some(usually all) upper bearing halves were worn.

Mileages between 100-170k miles.

Some of them only TWS,some of them other oils.

This is why I am a strong believer in PM regarding these parts,as they are the only thing that takes out an S62 completely.
What about running prolonged periods of running in low oil level situations? Do you think that could have contributed to this instance? Or would you say, just poor oil circulation?

while I know the S62 is more powerful, has higher compression, rev limiter etc as compared to the M62, it also comes from the factory with a "better" oiling system so those aspects of the S62 should not account for the higher bearing failure rate in S62s compared to the M62.
I still think getting to the bottom of the cause and finding a potential solution is better than pro-active bearing replacement.

You stated that under high lateral loads that oil pressure dropped very low. Obviously there must be a reason for that. So what is it?

It is the design of the oil pans as well as the pick up of the pump.

The oil starts to foam under certain conditions.

So instead of installing an expensive dry-sump system on every S62,I rather change the bearings every 100k or so.

Would be nice to see an in-pan video of this happening. So you are saying that the oil pressure reduction is a direct result of the oil foaming? Would an oil that is more resistant to foaming then help to prevent the issue from occurring?

And what is the difference here then with the S62 in the Z8 that doesn't have this problem?

I'd rather not have to change my bearings at all I guess is what I'm getting at. So I think finding a solution that makes that a reality would be to the benefit of everybody here.

Oil type does not really make that much difference.

Z8 are barely driven to higher mileages,hence no real issues.

The only way is a dry-sump system.

Forget it and change the bearings.

Doesn't the Z8 have a different pan setup?

Forgetting it and just swapping out the bearings is simply acknowledging the failure model and doing nothing to fix it IMHO. Like swapping out GM LIM gaskets for the same style that came in there rather than using the "updated" ones to fix the issue. Except in this case, nobody appears to have come up with a modification to the factory oil pan setup to fix the issue as of yet. I'm sure there is the ability to create a "fix" without having to do a dry-sump. Though obviously a dry-sump is a nice "upgrade" in of itself.

I'm sure I'm far from the only M5 owner on this site who has a problem with changing out rod bearings as a "preventative maintenance" item.

Hint the dry sump system comment was not a serious one hence the "stage 10" reference
That said replacing engine bearings every 100k miles, considering some engines have spun them well under 100K miles is not necessarily an easy and inexpensive of a task.

The problem already starts in the upper oil pan,which is on both cars the same.

If you ever take apart an upper oil pan,you will see there is no way to modify it sufficient.

And I should know,as I do trouble shooting issues like that for my living in the automotive industry.

For all the guys that refuse to change them,it is your own decision.
But don't start whining when you have a hole in the block..


This is my opinion and my experience with the S62.

I highly doubt you find many guys in the world who repair,rebuild and modify more of these engines than I do.....
