No updated Dinan stage 2 software?
According to BostonRocket and CM5GO there apparently is an updated stage 2 software available from Dinan. They mentioned that it increased the idle speed to 900 rpms and improved the throttle reponse throughout the powerband. I called my local Dinan retailer (Strictly BMW) and one of the reps there was clueless about it. But he was due to receive a call from a rep over at Dinan so he told me to call him back in an hour. An hour later I called back only to discover that there apparently was no such update to the stage 2 software.
I'm confused here...am I missing something here. I mentioned to the rep that Steve Dinan recently gave a workshop on the East coast and one of my friends from bmwm5.com received the updated software. He said he would look into it and get back to me. Can one of you two shed some light on this subject for me because I sure will love to try getting this upgrade!

same here... I asked my Dinan rep, who did the software download for Rocket, and he said that it was not a new version of the software... my rep thinks that the stage 2 software should not be paired up without CAI, as in Rocket's setup.... there are many factors why the idle has gone up, I suspect that the software senses there's not enough air going into the engine and tries to up the idle in order to drag more air into the engine... does that makes sense?

I am not sure if this helps or not...but...I was at my local dealer Monday picking up a part and I asked the local Dinan guy if he would update my software as I heard there was a new version out. He said he was not sure if it was a new version or not but that he'd be happy to load it for me.
I have NO other upgrades on my car except the Dinan software which was first loaded in March of '01?
Anyways, he applied the update and sure enough my car now idles at 900 rpms as compared to 500-600 before the new software. I cannot really notice much difference in the car other than the idle. Maybe the benefits of the software are only evident when coupled with others mods like CAI/Exhaust???
Anyways, I figured I'd share.

There is indeed an updated version of the software and they have raised the idle to 900 rpm's.
That is directly from my Dinan rep. Not from a dealer.
If your car does not idle at 900 rpm's, you do not have the updated software.
I dont know what else to tell you other than to call Dinan directly and have them straighten it out with your dealer.
Its worth the trouble. I am continually blown away by the new software.

Just to shed some light on the 900 RPMs.... I believe the idle is increased for when it is paired with the new flywheel. Dinan's new flywheel has something like 40% less rotational mass so the higher idleing RPMs were designed to help prohibit stalling the car when it is paired with the new flywheel (less rotation, easier to stall the car when letting out the clutch).
This is what I heard, and I hope it helps.

I am certain that I have an updated version of the engine software. Like CM5GO, my idle is at 900rpm, and I was told that it was made so that the lighter flywheel can hold idle better.
I highly doubt that it has anything to do with sensing not enough air.

Ok, it's possible that the idle speed increased to 900 rpms because as tfung said, it may be sucking in more air to compensate for the lack of the Dinan CAI. I think that this is the case because I noticed that BostonRocket, CM5GO and TommyGun all do not have the CAI in their cars. But I'll still do a bit of a research to get to the bottom of this whole thing.

It has nothing to do with the intake.
I am telling you... I called Dinan to make sure it was normal and they told me directly that they have updated the software and the new idle is 900 rpm's.
Call them for yourself if you dont believe me.

I believe you! I'm just quoting possibilities. Maybe the Dinan rep that my local reseller spoke to was clueless. I'll call the other Dinan reseller in my area to see what can be done!
