        NE1 w/ 1st-hand experience w/ Sachs Perf Clutch?

        Harold C? 540is?

Still waiting to find out from a board member if the Sachs Performance Clutch is or is not a true bolt-on replacement. My local speed shop said their distributor (SSF) thought the install took some machining of the dual-mass flywheel.

Anyone find otherwise? Thanks for the info!

        Teuton,

Sorry for the delay, i've been out of town for the past few weeks. The word from Sachs NA is that there should be no machining and that it is a direct bolt on replacement.

I am going a different route - I am going to install a custom aluminum flywheel built by VAC motorsports. The lightweight flywheel weighs only 11 pounds, versus the 38 lbs for the stock dual-mass unit. There is going to be some flywheel chatter at idle, but I am willing to make that trade off for quicker response. Since I track my car, I would like to be able to heel-toe quicker, which is not possible with the heavy dual-mass flywheel.

        Thanks, Harold!

I hear what Sachs says about "should be a direct bolt-on," but people out there installing them say otherwise.

I also learned in the interim that the M5 stock clutch is made by LuK, Inc. and not Sachs. I'm still waiting on a call from LuK regarding any aftermarket solutions they have....

As for my situation, I finally got BMW to agree to assist in my clutch replacement, after MUCH wrangling. They're going to split the costs with me as a goodwill gesture, unless they find a component failure, at which point it would all be covered under warranty.

Your lightweight flywheel option sounds interesting. Mind if I ask roughly what it costs to have one custom made? PM me if you'd rather.

Thanks for getting back to me!

        -Dave
