GoPro Pros and Cons

GoPro HD camera seems to be the weapon of choice when it comes to capturing tracking footage. I've been researching a bit, and I plan on getting the Motorsports package from Amazon ($269+tax). There're a bunch of other add ons, a bit bewildering in fact. Current owners, what add ons would you rate as essential and what type of disc seem to work better (corrupted disc issue)? Any other Pro/Cons of going with GoProHD? Thanks.

The add on's I'm looking at are:
  • LCD backpac
  • Battery backpac
  • Cig lighter charger
  • SDCH 16 or 32gb cards

Bimmer,

First off....you will love your GoPro. That said, there are definitely a lot of addons available, but a lot of them are useful depending on what types of activities you like to partake in. I love the outdoors and I use mine for snowboarding, surfing, wakeboarding, driving, hiking...you name it. I use the following mounts:

  • helmet mount (adhesive clip in mount)
  • roll bar mount (this can be used on lots of things, my favorite is attaching it to the end of a long pole)
  • suction cup mount (awesome for driving footage. Best to use on windows as you can damage your paint if you apply it to a dirty car....it's also more likely to fall off if the surface isn't clean)
My friend has the LCD backpack....I don't have one yet but it's probably good to have, otherwise you have no idea what your photos or footage looks like until you get home. Definitely get a big SD card as video can eat up a lot of memory really fast. 32g should be fine.

My only complaint with my camera is the battery life. It's shorter than I would expect it to be and the LCD battery display is misleading. It will go from 2 bars to flat almost instantly. Other than that once you get used to the unique operating style it's an awesome toy. You will love it for track footage....my favorite place to mount it inside my car is hanging from the sunroof in UpD mode (upside down mode) The video below is a lap at BMW M school in the M3. (Don't mind my crappy driving)! Also included a couple of my favorite videos to give you some ideas. My skydiving video is an example of the misleading battery (died halfway through my free fall)

Great share! The GoPro HD looks like so much fun. Do you have pics of how you mounted the camera for the in-car shots and the rear-exhaust shots?

The skydiving made me feel like I was falling out of the plane!

No pics handy at the moment but I can mount it later and take some photos.

Get one...or two!

I love my GoPro! Everything that JCM55555 is true and when you get one you will literally look around for things to record it is so funny! I actually had to buy 2 since you want to see your driving line from the "outside" of the car, and then it is cool to see what is going on "inside" the car also(Especially when your other half doesnt know its on and you find how funny in car conversations along with the looks can go!). The motorsports kit is great as that suction mount is seriously strong! It has held my GoPro on a plane wing going 150 kts with no issues at all. I got a roll bar mount to use in my track car and it is great with no crazy vibration. What extras I bought that I like the best are:
1. LCD Backpack so you can see what your filming
2. Roll Bar mount for roll bar or a pole like he stated above
3. Helmet mount or use headband they both are awesome
4. Chest mount(I love to put this on my kids and watch them talk and run when at the beach it is priceless!)
If you do any sports these mounts work also for a good reviewing tactics or skills or to strap them to kids or pets for good video fun But in any event you will love it and get a big memory card too and don't forget to realize what back plate you have in case you will be exposing it to water or not!

You won't need any of those add-ons if you plan on using it to record your track days. Maybe the cigarette lighter one and that's about it.

All of the others would be great for extended periods of time like time-lapses and recording for hours on end.

I looked into the GoPro too...definitely want one down the road. I don't see any mention of this on their webpage, but any idea if they're going to come out with a version 2.0 or is this one just that good that a second generation might not be necessary?

Not sure but I know their newest thing(to me) was the 3D where you put 2 GoPro's together in a special case for 3D video.
