Exclamation Tech: Have we talked about OIL enough yet?

I know this has been discussed over, and over, and over again, but I had to share this tidbit. I just picked up my car from it's first oil service and they put the 10w60 oil in without any input from me. I'm happy and somewhat surprised. I thought the bulletin about this did not include the E39 M5?

They probably put in the wrong oil if you have an M5 built after 3/00. Service people are not very accurate, so it is easier just to put the thick stuff in all M5s rather than to think about it:

Information bulletin 11 04 00, dated October 2001 and it states the following: Engine Oil Recommendations:
8 Cylinder Engine (S62)
Engine Oil Recommendation:

M5 produced up to 3/00:
Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 or
Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60
Synthetic Oil
BMW Part Number: 07 51 0 009 420

M5 produced from 3/00, Z8 all:
BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil
SAE 5W-30
BMW Part Number: 07 51 0 017 866

I would check service order for quantity and check oil level. If it says 8-qt, then they probably overfilled it.

Rgds,
Norm
