500 HP M5 from BMW... "Maybe" according to latest BMW Magazine
Quotes from the latest BMW Magazine in a mail I received:
"I just
finished reading the latest BMW Magazin, there was a interview with Mr.
Pommesberger regarding the new M3, and also a some words from Mr.
Pommersberger saying "who knows, there will be maybe a 500hp M5 one
day"

From Http://www.bmw2002.co.uk/news.htm
The sporty end of the BMW model program will soon be marked by the all-new 6-series coupé and cabrio which are going to replace the current unsuccessful 8-series in 2002. Basing on the chassis of the up-coming 5-series (the 8-series is basing on the 7-series), the new cars will be better proportioned with sophisticated handling and superb design. Aggressive yet elegant, typical BMW yet completely new - a 2+2-seater playing in the league of Ferrari 456 and Maserati 3200 GT at probably half the price. The design of the new 6-series will be reminiscence to the old 6-series (built until 1988) and will be dominated by huge 18"-wheels, a long bonnet, the interesting layout of the headlights and flashers and the additional air-intakes in the car's front wings. Engine range will start with the 3.5-litre V8 producing 235 HP followed by the 4.4-litre V8 with 286 HP. The 650 with 326 HP will be available, too, and the M-Company is certainly already waiting to transform the car into an M6 with the brand-new M5's mega-power engine. M5 engine from the Next M5, not to be confused with the latest M5 400 Bhp engine. New engine N62 likely to get 100 Bhp per litre (500 Bhp).

Maybe it's me, but that car looks like someone did some cut & pastes with current Z3, 5-series and 3-series pictures. The front headlights were lifted right from my wife's 300M. If BMW does revive the 6, I hope they give it some of it's own design cues and not let it look like it escaped from the BMW Island of Dr. Moreau.

ME,
The ML is my wife's, after trading up from a Grand Cherokee and then a Durango. We needed the third row seat and she wanted something more luxurious than the Durango.
A couple of minor quality issues at delivery - seat belt anchor needed adjustment, leather seat blemish/ imperfection, loose washer in driver's side door, and driver's side B-Pillar interior trim popped loose (caused inoperability of seatbelt upper attach adjuster). All fixed.
The truck is great - I highly recommend it. We have the Skyview (long sunroof) and the Nav is the best installed on any Mercedes (made by Alpine w/ joystick interface) though still not up to Lexus standards (DVD and touchscreen).
The reason I'm awaiting both the E55 and M5 is I fell in love with the E55 when it came out and have wanted one ever since. I've owned both Mercs and Bimmers.
I recently returned a damaged '01 E55 by arranging a deal where I'll take delivery of another in Feb. While dealing with the damaged car, driving my 540/6 as backup, I ordered an M5. Now I have both coming in soon. BTW, if you haven't driven an E55 you should. It's an incredible ride.
While searching the bimmer.org and this site, I'm getting concerned with the apparent reliability issues with the M5. I've had no problems w/ the 540 and the E55 was, other than technician error, rock solid. Plus I drive the Reston Corridor in Washington DC and the Auto would help.
That all said, I can't bring myself to canceling the M5 order. I have the "NEED".
